GUENIN, Lawrence L.
Marion Chronicle Tribune (Grant Co., Indiana); Monday 2 March 2009; online

LaFONTAINE — Lawrence L. “Shorty” Guenin, 92, died February 28 at his rural LaFontaine home. He was a devoted husband, proud father, doting grandfather, and steadfast friend.
He was born September 29, 1916, in Pleasant Township (Grant County) to the late Oren and Elsie Weaver Guenin. Lawrence lived near Sweetser and in Van Buren, and graduated from LaFontaine High School with the class of 1935.
He was preceded in death by his sister Vera Grant (Francis) and brothers Kenneth (Lois), Wayne, and William. Brother John and his wife Wilma survive, along with Isabel Guenin Ford and Betty Guenin.
On August 17, 1940, Lawrence married Marguerite Troyer in Mishawaka, Indiana. Throughout their 68 years together he encouraged her interests, projects, and club activities. The couple regularly attended their family’s sports events, their church and school programs and affirmed each person’s efforts.
Mrs. Guenin survives, as do the children: Oren (Rita) of Marion; Jean Wright (Larry), LaFontaine; and Mark (Diane), Wabash.
In addition, Lawrence was “Grandpa Shorty” to grandchildren Steve, Jeff and Laura Guenin; Alicia O’Roark, Paul and Tom Wright; Emily Guenin-Hodson, Natalie Unger, and Lindsey Jones, and to great-grandchildren Jacob, Jordyn, Alec and Chase Guenin; Tucker, Sam, and Paisley O’Roark; Izaak and Logan Wright; Troy and Rob Guenin-Hodson; James Unger; and Laney Jones.
He loved his home and family — especially if he could be rocking a grandbaby, and a good game of euchre or pinochle.
Lawrence was a farmer in Grant and Wabash Counties, and helped with last fall’s harvest on the John Deere equipment he preferred.
He was a member and past Worshipful Master of LaFontaine Lodge No. 295, F. & A.M., and a Worthy Patron of Eastern Star. He also was a member of Metosinia #533 of IOOF.
There will be calling from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at McDonald Funeral Home, LaFontaine Chapel, 104 S. Main St., LaFontaine, and at the church one hour before the service.
The service to celebrate Lawrence’s life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, at St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ in Wabash. Charles and Eileen Dye will lead the time of remembrance and thanksgiving. Burial will be at the LaFontaine IOOF Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Matthews Church (1717 N. Wabash St., Wabash, IN 46992), where Shorty and Marguerite worshipped.
Condolences may be shared with the Guenin family online at [website omitted].
“Go now in peace,” faithful, generous servant.
