The surname Haddrell (Soundex code H364) is quite rare in the USA, although it seems to be more common in England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Haddrell is the surname of my maternal grandmother, née PHYLLIS MARY HADDRELL. If you do a search for the surname Haddrell on the US Social Security Death Index, you will find only five Haddrells, all of whom are related to me. From what I have heard, all Haddrells seem to have originally come from Calne in Wiltshire, England.
LUCY HADDRELL

The Descendants of Lucy Haddrell
My 4th great-grandmother and earliest known Haddrell ancestor is LUCY HADDRELL. She was born about March 31, 1800 in Calne, Wiltshire, England. We have found no birth record for her, so we do not know the names of her parents. As far as we know, she was never married, but she had at least one son, HENRY THOMAS HADDRELL (see below). Lucy died on May 31, 1857 in London, England. Sadly, out of all the Descendants of Lucy Haddrell that I know about, there are very few who will actually carry on the Haddrell surname.
HENRY THOMAS HADDRELL   My 3rd great-grandfather, HENRY THOMAS HADDRELL, was born in 1826 in Richmond, Surrey, England. His father was possibly a Thomas Neville. He married ELIZABETH SHADDICK on June 28, 1849 in Knightsbridge, London, England. They had at least six children, all born in England. The family later moved to New Zealand, where Henry died on December 14, 1898 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
WALTER HENRY HADDRELL
My 2nd great-grandfather, WALTER HENRY HADDRELL, was born January 5, 1850 in Chapelton, Tawstock, Devon, England. He immigrated to New Zealand with his parents and family. He married MARY ANNE RAINE on November 18, 1875 in Christchurch, New Zealand. They had seven children before Mary's death in 1906. Walter died in 1932 in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

My great-grandfather, CHARLES HENRY THOMAS HADDRELL, was born October 12, 1876 in Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand. His family was originally from England and on a trip there to visit family, he met his bride, ANNA BEATRICE SHADDICK, who was a second cousin on his mother's side. They were married on July 11, 1907 in Newport, Barnstaple, Devon, England. After their first child, WALTER GILBERT HADDRELL (1909-1986), was born they moved to the US, where my grandmother, PHYLLIS MARY HADDRELL (see below), and her younger brother, CLIFFORD CHARLES HADDRELL (1913-1986), were born. The family eventually settled in nearby Marblehead, MA, USA, where Charles and Beatrice lived until their deaths. Charles Henry Thomas Haddrell died in December 1964 and is buried at Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead, Essex County, MA, USA.
PHYLLIS MARY HADDRELL

c. 1933

July 25, 1936

My grandmother, PHYLLIS MARY HADDRELL, was born October 26, 1911 in Swampscott, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. The family later moved to the nearby town of Marblehead. Phyllis received her Bachelor's Degree from Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard University) in 1933. She worked at MCI Framingham as a social worker. On July 25, 1936 she married EVERETT CARLETON FOSTER in Swampscott, Essex County, MA, USA. The couple had two children (both still living), and then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio for Everett's job with General Electric (GE). After her children were grown, Phyllis worked as a social worker for the Cincinnati Welfare Department. In 1964, she received her MA in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. Phyllis died from heart problems on June 26, 1981 and is buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Montgomery, Hamilton County, OH, USA.
