LANTZ GENEALOGY Maryland. From here they spread out over the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and south through the Western part of Virginia, including West Virginia and North Carolina. These colonists after a hard trip down the Rhine Valley to Rotterdam, were loaded on small coasting vessels (whence the name "Bilander"). The trip usually took about six months although in some instances they were on the Atlantic over a year. The boats were small and crowded and the suf- fering was intense and great numbers of them died on the way over. As a rule they arranged to pay their passage over by selling their services for a certain number of years after landing in Philadelphia. A man was usually bound out for three years and most of the children were bound out until they reached their majority. This enabled them to learn the nature, customs, and peculiarities of the new country before starting out for themselves. Among these colonists we find the following Lantzs: Landing Aug. 11, 1732, from Bilander Samuel, Johannes Lentz (John Lents), age 24; Maria Lentsin, age 25; Chris- tina Lentsin, age 49; John Lents, age 3.
