                HANS (JOHN) LANTZ

The Lantzs of Caernarvon Township, Pa.

Hans Lantz, the founder of the Lantz family of Caer-
narvon Township, Lancaster County, Pa., was the owner of
150 acres of land in Caernarvon Township. Here he lived
and raised his family until 1778 when he assigned the old
home place to his son Jacob. He had bought a farm of 100
acres in a neighboring township, Heidelberg, Berks Co.,
in 1776. He was a prosperous farmer but did not learn the
English language. His will is written in German and
among other things provides 2000 L for his widow Anna
Maria and life support by his son, Jacob. His will mentions
the following children: Christian, John, Jacob, two sons of
Samuel, who is dead, Peter, and Henry.
It is probable that this is the John Lents who came to
America from Germany at the age of 3 years, landing at
Philadelphia, Aug. 11, 1732. This would make him born in
1729 and a son of Johannes and Maria Lantz, who came to
this country with him and from whom he probably inherited
the Caernarvon land. The Christian Lantz (A) who moved
from Lancaster County to Leitersburg District Maryland
was very probably a brother. On the other hand, both of
these boys may have been sons of the Johannes Lantz who
came to Tulpehocken by way of New York State.
