Ingebrigt
Amundson
Very
little has been known about Ingebrigt Amundson, whom Abel Cathrine married
in 1854. We are happy, therefore, to add what is made possible by the genealogy
pursuits of Eleanor and Ken Brown, Eleanor being a great-granddaughter of
Ingebrigt. Ken has been researching his wife's roots and their trip to Norway in
1984 greatly aided his endeavors.
Ingebrigt's lineage goes back to the year 1500. This information was furnished by Sven O Goa, from Goa, Randaberg, near Stavanger, Norway. Sven is a descendant of Ingebrigt's brother, Ole Amundson Goa. There are descendants of Ole presently living in both Norway and the USA as well as in Canada. Eleanor has met and corresponded with a number of these. Ingebrigt's parents were Ommund Ingebrigtsen Goa (1797-1876) and Kristi Olsen Mo (1795-1865). It has been told by living descendants of Ole, that Ommund and Kristi were married at the church in Avaldsness after they eloped, from Oystese, which is on the north shore of Hardangerfjord - straight east of Bergen. At Oystese (facing East), Ommund lived at Nedre (lower) Vik (creek) and his surname was Vik. Kristi lived at Mo (flat place).
From
the Aettarbok (family book) for Kvam, Hardanger, Nedre Vik (the following is a
translation from the Norwegian):
"Oddmund
Brigtsen Nedre Vik (1797-1876) spouse Kristi Olavsdtr. Moe (1795-1865).
Oddmund and his wife went immediately after their marriage south to Hove near
Haugesund and settled themselves. Later on they bought the Goa farm close
to Stavanger. Oddmund worked himself upward and became an affluent
man. He loaned out money to people here in the community."
Since
Oddmund and Kristi left Kvam there was apparently no further interest in them
for entry in the family book for that area, so no children are listed.
From the above, it would seem that the couple were married before they left the
area. There is doubt, therefore, that they eloped to Avaldsness.
Church records might settle the question.
Ingebrigt
was born July 21, 1820 at Hoye, which is believed to be a farm near Avaldsness
on the island of Karmoy just across the sound from Haugesund, Norway. He
came to the USA from Stavanger on the ship "Ebenezer" (Captained by
H.C. Clausen) which landed in New York June 15, 1849. The passenger list
shows "Brugt Ammundsen, 29, male." Despite the discrepancy in
spelling it seems certain that the "Brugt Ammundsen" is Ingebrigt
because in other independent information he left Norway in 1849 and in that year
he would have been 29.
There
is no information concerning Ingebrigt's reasons for leaving Norway, nor for his
reasons or means of arriving in Albion, Dane County, Wisconsin. It is not known
when he arrived in Albion.
He
married Abel Cathrine (von Krogh) Anderson on March 18, 1854. She was a
widow with eight children, six of whom were still living with her on the
homestead which she and her first husband established in 1841. The farm
was just south of the little settlement of Hillside, Wisconsin at the junction
of Hillside Road and Dane County Trunk A.
It
is of interest to note, in studying the lineage of Ingebrigt and Bjorn, that
they had common ancestors in at least one line of descent.
