DANIEL ALEXANDER KEITH, SR. was born Abt. 1737 in Dublin, Ireland, and died Abt. 1829 in Franklin Co., TN.  He married ELIZABETH LIDDELL Abt. 1761 in Pendleton District, SC.  She was born Abt. 1744 in Talbot Co., MD, and died Abt. 1840 in Franklin Co., TN.

Notes for DANIEL ALEXANDER KEITH, SR.:
 

From the "Franklin Co. Historical Review," published in 1969:  By 1773, Elizabeth's parents moved to SC where they received 200 acres of land on Penny's Creek, a fork of the Little River in Abbeville District.  Their son-in-law, Daniel Keith, accompanied them or followed a few years later.  It's possible he didn't leave the eastern shore until after the Revolutionary War.  There are records of men named Daniel Keith serving in the Revolution from MD and PA, but not SC.  The land records of Pendleton District (later named Anderson Co.) show:

 

1) On 23 Jun 1792, Daniel bought 200 acres on the Little Generostee Creek. 

2) On 15 Mar 1800, he bought 185 acres on Devil's Fork of the Little Generostee Creek.  On the same date, he bought a tract of 35 acres in the same area from Moses Liddell. 

3)  On 4 Feb 1804, he sold "the land where I now live" on Devil's Fork to Alexander Calhoun.  The deed was recorded on 29 Oct 1806, which must have been about the time the Keith family moved to TN.

In 1807, after the Indian title to the land south of the Duck River in TN had been extinguished and the area opened for settlement, a number of SC families took up land in Franklin County, which was created on 3 Dec 1807 and organized on 25 Apr 1808.  A year or two earlier, Daniel Keith had moved to TN with eight of his children.  This was a group migration as was the custom of the times.  His children, now married, soon scattered somewhat according to their individual circumstances: two of them settled in Giles Co.; one (Esther Brazelton) went first to Giles Co. and returned to Franklin; two went to Jackson Co., AL; one to Marlon Co. and later to Rutherford Co.; and one (James) remained in Franklin Co.  The latter is the progenitor of hundreds of Keith's and others throughout the south and west. 

 

Daniel Keith first appears in the records of Franklin Co. when, on 10 Jul 1809, he bought 247 acres of land on the Bolling Fork of Elk at the foot of Cumberland Mountain from Henry Rutledge.  This adjoined the 228-acre property which his son, James, had been granted on 16 Dec 1808.  The 1812 tax list for Franklin Co. does not list Daniel Keith.  He had moved to Lincoln Co. where, on 4 Jun 1810, he sold his 247-acre tract to Benjamin Wear of Franklin Co.  About the same time, he acquired land in the southern part of Lincoln Co. from John Strother.  Daniel disposed of this land in two separate sales in 1813 and 1814 and returned to Franklin Co. by 1815.  On 1 Jan 1816, he sold some land to his son-in-law, William Brazelton - both listed as "of Franklin Co."

 

Daniel is next found in Jackson Co., AL.  In 1819, shortly before AL became a state, the Federal Government proposed removing settlers from the Cherokee Indian land.  A petition, signed by some 250 residents "north of the Tennessee River," protested the action - one of the signatories was Daniel Keith.  There is no 1820 census of Jackson Co., but on 30 Mar 1820 - as a resident of Jackson Co. - he sold some land to David Lewis of Franklin Co.

 

Daniel Keith died sometime in the 1820's.  His wife had probably predeceased him because the last recorded evidence of her was in 1804.  He may have died in Jackson Co., but since he was then blind and apparently widowed, and since he is buried in Franklin Co., it is more likely that he died at the home of his son, James, on the Bolling Fork of Elk.  He was 90 years old.  He is buried in an unmarked grave beside that of his son in Goshen Churchyard.  Burial: Goshen Churchyard Cemetery, Franklin Co., TN

 

Notes for ELIZABETH LIDDELL:  According to some records on ancestry.com, she was born in New Castle Co., Delaware.  It would appear the family started in DE and then moved to MD between 1750-1752.  According to Jean Wells, she was born in MD.

Notes for ALEXANDER KEITH:  His name may be Daniel Alexander according to information from Jean Wells.  He and Ellen went to Christian Co. after Jul 1838.

Dec 2000: ancestry chart submitted by "[email protected]" to Ancestry.com, lists the same children excluding Amanda and William but including one named John Daniel Keith, born 3 Dec 1832.  He could be the male 5-10 in 1840.  She also included some middle names:  Joseph Johnson Keith, Sarah Lee Keith (I changed my records to match, but it's subject to change again).

Notes for ELLEN H. WADLEY:  Several researchers state that this Alexander married Sarah Miller but according to his sons' death certificates (Joseph and William Alexander) their mother was Ellen Wadley.  The Alexander Keith who married Sarah Miller was in Muhlenberg (he could be the son of Alexander and Sarah Galey Keith).

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH KEITH:  The marriage bond with Henry lists her father as Alexander Keith; mother was not named.

Mary wed a second time in Muhlenberg Co., at age 76.  The marriage bond lists her father as Daniel Keith born in TN and her mother as Ellen Wadley born in TN (Daniel would actually have been her grandfather unless Daniel was Alexander's first name).  She married D. W. H. Carlton, age 62 of Hopkins Co., KY (his third marriage).  He was a farmer born in TN - his father was J. B. Carlton, TN, and mother was C. A. Wilkes, born TN.  They were married at the home of Joseph Lile on 26 Dec 1906 in Muhlenberg Co.  Witnesses were Joe Lile and W. A. Oglesby.  He and his second wife must have divorced because she lived until 1930.

Mary Knight, 80 years old, died at home of her son, James Knight, 22 Feb 1910, buried at Rock Bridge Cemetery in Christian Co.

If Mary is buried at Rock Bridge, there is no tombstone for her under Carlton or Knight  (I've walked the entire cemetery twice).  Next to D. W. H. Carlton is his first wife, Martha.

In Aug 2001, A. B. Willhite told Wanda Barnes that Henry Farley and Mary moved to Logan Co. to be close to Joseph.  He had gone squirrel hunting and died.  The dogs came home without him, and they went looking for him.  He was supposedly buried in the Coursey Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

Henry Farley Knight paid $50 bond on 4 Dec 1847 to Christian Co. for marriage to Mary Elizabeth Keith - co-signed by her father, Alexander Keith.  Marriage performed 9 Dec 1847.

Notes for DANIEL WADE HAMILTON CARLTON:

Wade was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a great fiddle player.  The inscription on his tombstone says "he has gone to the mansions of rest."  (Photo, Aug 02).  His death is not recorded on the KY Deaths CD.

The marriage license for he and Amanda was issued in Christian Co. on 5 Nov 1875.   The certificate was issued 7 Nov 1875.  They were married at the home of Joseph Hight by William Hight, JP, in the presence of Joseph C. Hight and A. C. Oglesby.
