Bernard went to De La Salle Grammar School, Scott Rd, Sheffield and became a founder member of the "Old Boys Club" based at Beauchief Hall. Prior to the Second World war Bernard worked for Sheffield Corporation as a Clerk in the Electricty Department. He did military service during WWII in the REME and on his return from service bacame a teacher. His teaching career was spent at St. Patrick's RC & St Peter's RC Comp. schools, Sheffield. The family home was 24 Meadowhead Sheffield and the family were active parishioners of Our Lady's & St Thomas' RC Church on Meadowhead.
