At the time of the 1901 census James was living with his parents at 118 Solly Street, Sheffield.
At the time of the 1939 Register James and his wife Lucy were living at 6 Crookes, Sheffield, at which time James is recorded as a trench digger for electricity cables.
James died in Sheffield aged 51, at which time he was living at 241 Bell Hagg Road. He is buried at St Michael's Cemetery, Rivelin. In the same grave are Thomas Mulrenan, Charlotte Mulrenan (nee Walsh), and Thomas Mulrenan
