In the 1881 census William was recorded living with his parents at Stubbin, Hoyland Nether, Yorkshire and was noted as being a cripple from birth. In the 1891 census he is with his mother and brother John James at 76 Broad Street, Parkgate, Rawmarsh, Yorkshire and was by this time a Clothier's Manager.
William died 5 August 1900 aged 27 and his address was 395 Staniforth Road, Tinsley (where his parents are recorded in the 1901 census) and was described as Assistant Manager. He is buried in Tinsley cemetery in the same grave as his paret (XA86nc)
