James was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Rothwell near Leeds on 7 November 1830, although his surname was recorded as Hillingworth

At the time of the 1841 census James was living with his parents at Ingram Place, Rothwell, Yorkshire [HO/107/1269/16/10]. He was still with them at Ingram Place at the time of the 1851 census were his occupation is recorded as a Coal Engine Tenter [HO/107/2316/6/376].

James' occupation was an Engine Feeder/Driver at Iron Works/Blast Furnace. In the mid 1850s he moved to the West Bromwich area for work. He married Sarah Baugh who was living in Wednesbury in 1855. Their first three children were born in the West Bromich area and their addresses are recorded as Fallens (Fallings) Heath, Wednesbury in 1857; Holyhead Road, Wednesbury in 1859; Hawkes Lane, Hill Top, West Bromich in 1863.

By the time of the 1861 census he and Sarah were living along with young children Dan and Mary at Coppice North, Tipton, Staffordshire [RG9/2043/79/11 - surname recorded as Hillingsworth]. James was described as an Engineer.

Towards the end of the 1860s the family had moved back to Yorkshire and their forth child was born in Stubbin, near Elsecar, Hoyland Nether in 1869.

The 1871 census recorded that James and his family were living at St Helen's Street, Hoyland Nether, Yorkshire and his occupation was given as an Engine Tenter [RG10/4650/28/10]. In the 1881 census they were still in the same area recorded as Stubbin, Hoyland Nether. James was a Stationary Engine Tenter [RG 11/4607/141/35]. In the 1891 census James was not with the rest of his family who were at Broad Street, Parkgate, Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, but it appears he was a lodger at 106 Brompton Road, Attercliffe cum Darnall, Sheffield working as a labourer in the steelworks [RG12/3838/62/57- surname Illinsworth]. He was back living with his wife Sarah Ann at the time of the 1901 census when they they are both recorded as living at 395 Staniforth Road, Attercliffe cum Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire [RG13/4385/39/23] (this address is recorded as their son William's address atthe time of his death in 1900). James was recorded as being a Boiler Fireman.
At the time of the 1911 census James and his wife Sarah were living with their eldest son Dan at 20 Plumpers Road, Tinsley Sheffield

When James died in 1914 and was described as a retired engineer of 34 St Lawrence Road, Tinsley. He is buried at Tinsley cemetery in the same grave as his wife Sarah and son William (XA86nc)
