At the time of the 1871 cencus John was living with his parents at 7 Ingram Place, Rothwell [RG10/4518/8/10]. In1881 when he was 18 he was a Coal Miner and with his parents at 9 Lower Goslam, Rothwell [RG11/4494 84 12]. He married Ann Eliis in 1887 and in 1891 they were living at Plevna Street, Rothwell with young daughter Emily. John had become a Stationary Engine Man [RG12 /3668 106 45]. They are still in Plevna Street in 1901with their young family [PRO Ref. RG13 /4199 127 50]. By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to Victoria Mount, Rothwell Haigh. At the time of the 1939 Register John was living with his daughter Lilian and her family at 74 Haigh Road, Rothwell and he is describeed as a retired Colliery Winding Engineman.
