William McKINTY

  General Notes:

In the 1841 census William and family are recorded as 'McKinty' and living in Campbells Close, Canongate, Edinburgh. William is recorded as being a labourer born in Ireland as is his son Hugh, whilst his son William, aged 15, is described as a Wright Journeyman.

The family would appear to have emigrated from Ireland to Scotland sometime between 19^th May 1939 (baptism of Hugh's son James in the Parish of Glenarm, Antrim) and 28^th March 1841 (birth of Hugh's daughter Mary Ann in Edinburgh). The records found for the family in Ireland are all under the name of McKinty as are the early Scottish ones. It seems once in Scotland the spelling of their name gradually changed from McKinty to McGinty, with a few strange variations along the way.

William seems to have picked up work wherever he could. At the time of his daughter Sarah's wedding in 1840 William was described as a Gardener residing at 78 Canongate. He is described as a Porter residing in Campbells Close at the time of his daughter Frances' wedding in 1842. When his wife died in 1858 he was described as "sometimes a Stone Breaker". When his son Hugh died in 1860 William was noted as being deceased and described as a Road Labourer. When his daughter Frances died in 1867 her late father was described as a Cart Upholsterer.

The various records give various spellings for his wife Margaret's maiden name, but all seem a variant of Hannay. William's death in 1859 was recorded by his daughter Sarah (the wife of Thomas McKenzie) and the record states that he was a labourer and that his late father was John McGinty (farmer) and his mother Sarah Duncan.

Both William and his wife Margaret are recorded as living at (Middle) Meal Market Stairs, Cowgate, Edinburgh at the time of their deaths in 1859 and 1858 respectively.

William married Margaret HANNAY, daughter of John HANNAY and Margaret GILLESPIE. (Margaret HANNAY was born about 1791 in Ireland and died on 17 Aug 1858 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.)
