In the 1901 census Bertrand was living at home with his parents at 276 Springvale Road, Sheffield, his occupation was given as an assistant at a Gents Outfitters. Bertrand joined the 1st/4th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in the First World War as was killed in France on 4th August 1917.
