Algernon Ernest Anthony9,10,30,31,32
was born on 12 Jun 1871 in Oxenton,.Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
He appeared in the census in 1881 in Albert cottage Upper Butts Worcester, living
with his grandfather Richard. He appeared in the census in 1891 in
Beckhampton house, Avebury, Wilts working as a stable hand for Samuel Darling.
He at time of Grand national win on Ambush weighed in at 11.3lb on 30 Mar 1900.
The skeleton of Ambush has in the past been displayed at the horse racing museum
in Liverpool.
His hoof was reportedly made into an inkwell! He died Septic appendicitis,with
operation stangulation by bands with operation 8 months on 30 Nov 1923 in Kildare
County infirmary, Ireland. After his death, his widow gave all his
silks and momentos back to the palace, an exhibition was recently held showing
all the museum pieces at The Royal Mews.
He was buried on 1 Dec 1923 in Kildare Ireland. Death notice in
Irish Times 1.12.1923 reads ANTHONY on Friday Nov 30th 1923 at Kildare, Algernon

1900 30 March rode Ambush 11 at Grand National a win for HRH Prince
of Wales. His weight was 13s.3lb. & his silks were the Royal colours of Purple
body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves black cap with gold fringe. Ambush II was
11-3

Algy Anthony completed a rare riding and training double at the Grand National
when he turned out Troytown to win in 1920 as a trainer, having 1st won in 1900
when he rode the Royal horse Ambush II, coming from the stables at Eyrefield
lodge.
Unbelievable film footage has now been found, restored & out on DVD of Mitchell
and Kenyon in Ireland in 1902, in which they filmed a short sequence of Ambush
II coming out of his stable, led by his 'trainer' and rode by his 'jockey'-possibly
Joe Hunter.
The film was restored by the BFI and is in remarkable condition.
Algernon Ernest Anthony and Mary Anne Titcombe were married on 7 Jul
1898 in Avebury Wiltshire. Algy was living on the Curragh at the
time of his marriage to Mary
witnesses at thier marriage were Albert and Ellen Titcombe
Mary Anne
Titcombe (daughter of Richard Titcombe and Emma Amy Rolf) was born in 1877
in Avebury Wiltshire. She was baptized on 7 Oct 1877 in Avebury Wiltshire.
She was ill with diabetes and had gone blind about 1950 in Norfolk.
