My Mother and my aunts said Jake was mean and treated their Mother badly, my Uncle Charlie didn't think he was mean. The girls lived with their Mother after divorce and the boys spent more time with their father. Jake may have had more children by other wives. Uncle Arizona was said to be upset because Jacob named another son Arizona.

He (Lewis) has been to Horse Fly at a dance some got rough so they deputized Lewis to keep order. They danced 2 nights and 3 days. I have heard people say Lewis had the bestone horse sleigh in B.C. When he came home he pulled the single shot bolt action out of the sled and the bolt caught on the sleigh, pulled the hammer back just far enough to discharge the gun and killed Lewis. The man heard Lewis say, "Oh Lord, I shot myself." Mother was pleased that he said, `Oh Lord.'" (per Charlie Roberts, 21 Aug 86) There is a Roberts Lake and a Roberts Peak named for the family in B.C. No children

#3 Absalom & Mary "Polly" (BAILEY) GODFREY. Absalom s/o Thomas & Susan STEPHENSON/Stevenson Lusk, widow of David Lusk. Mary BAILEY d/o Richard BAILEY, Sr. who had dtr Julian md Alex PINE. Absalom had brother, Bird/Burgess who went to Auglaize Co,Ohio. Absalom moved into Logan Co abt 1824, but prob. went back to upper part of Tazewell Co abt 1828. Taz record 1828 he bot 416 acres from Mary LONG, and appears he remained there until abt 1839, when he returned to Logan Co--Little Huff Cr. now Wyoming Co. In 1831 he sold 100 A to Cornelius WHITE, & 150 A to William BAILEY. In 1832 100 A to Absalom LUSK. Varina Godfrey Christian said that Burgess returned to Vir ginia from Ohio and persuaded Absalom and 2 of his sons to return to Ohio with him where they could get plenty of work as blacksmiths. They went there for abt a year. Absalom got homesick, also sick in health, they returned to Logan Co, VA and Absalom died a short time later.

Last two girls died of diptheria in an epidemic. Their mother "quit
living", according to Phylow, after this, on the 1880 census is the word
"insane" by her name. Evidently she went crazy with grief. I had always

Richard BAILEY was born in Lancaster, England around the year 1735.
He was the son of James BAILEY d c1764 & Lucy (Simms). This was the information listed in the Johnson's History of the New River settlements. It has been written that Richard served in the Revolutionary Army. Mary Ellen Howe
disclaims this, however the DAR did erect a Monument in his honor, in Bluefield, WV. came to America prior 1760. The sources agree that Richard
married Elizabeth Anne "Annie" BELCHER b c1742 England, and moved to Beaver Pond Creek which enters Bluestone River in Bluefield, Virginia. Eliz. Anne was d/o Richard & Mary Obedience (Clay) BELCHER, s/o John BELCHER
However in Richard BAILEY and his descendants by Mary Ellen Howe we find Richard settled in Bedford County, Virginia, which later became a part of Franklin County. Having moved there from Chesterfield County where his father James and Lucy Simms BAILEY lived. According to Mary Howe, James and Lucy had three sons and two daughters. Benjamin, James BAILEY Jr., Richard, Elizabeth BAILEY Melton, and Mary BAILEY Daniel. They once owned much of the property in this area. Including the land where Bluefield College now stands and Leatherwood farm.
Richard and Annie Belcher BAILEY had a large family of sons and daughters, namely:

Bluefield, 1 at Montcalm, 1 nr Beartown, 1 dtr m Harman & 1 McComas John and Nancy's family are Jonathan, Archibald, George, Mastin, Martha, Rebecca, and James. Their daughter Martha married Henry Harman and through them I am also descended from the line of Richard BAILEY the pion eer. Their descendands are found in the Harman family file.

ZACHARIAH BAILEY s/o James Sr Family History
Zachariah BAILEY was born c1788 in Body Topp (prob. Botetourt Co), VA. That his mother was Miss Mary BAILEY. Mary was thought to have been a HOPKINS/poss BAKER?. Zachariah BAILEY was a lost child. Born in 1788, as far as we can figure out he was ten years old in the year of 1798.
His mother, Mary BAILEY came to their home, (home unknown) in the upper part of the Carolina's or the southern part of Virginia (prob. Louisa Co,
VA). Miss BAILEY was riding a horse carrying saddle bags and her smallest son, Robert, the oldest son being Zachariah was riding a pack mule. He kept falling off the pack mule so she stopped at this and left him there with the understanding she would be back for him. There were rumors that she was carrying important papers for the army, and that she was on her way to Louisiana (prob. Louisa Co), but she never came back or was ever heard
from again. Except rumors that she camped in a near by a school house, that the school house was burned down later that night. Zachariah lived at this
place believing that he was bound to the owner until he was 16 years old.
Not knowing anything of his mother or his younger brother Robert, except he remembered the saddle bags that his mother was carrying on the horse she was riding. He saw them and recognized them at this place much later when he was older. This man was unkind to him and brought him up like a slave, but he stayed until he grew into manhood. A neighbor by the name of Mr. Hawkins got sick and sent for Zachariah. This man had been a life long friend to him and was good and kind to Zachariah. So, Zachariah went to see Mr. Hawkins and the man told him he wasn't going to live long, and that he was not bound to the man who had worked him all these years. He told him of his mother leaving him there, and never being heard of again, and that he was a free man, and to leave this man as soon as he could, so Zachariah decided to leave and left the following day. Zachariah left the man he had been slave to, and walked five or six days in a northerly direction. He could tell he was going north by the tree bark. He stopped at a house for something to eat, this was near Body Topp (prob. Botetourt), Virginia. This was a Mr. Amburm home. The family was kind and good to him. Mr. Amburn offered him a job, which he accepted, and stayed with them. Later Zachariah married Mr. Ambrum's daughter Ester. He lived with her twelve years, and she died leaving no children. Now after researching old court records a record in Wythe County states James BAILEY binds his son, Henry to the keeping of Elizabeth Hadley until his twenty first birthday. Now our family record shows Henry was Zachariah's middle name, so it can presumed that James BAILEY was the father of Zachariah Henry BAILEY. James was the son of Richard BAILEY the pioneer who along with John Davidson built the fort at Beaver Pond Springs, on Beaver Pond Creek which enters Bluestone River in Bluefield, VA. Some of this area later became WV after 1863.
Richard BAILEY Sr, b c1735 d 1818 married Elizabeth Ann Belcher b c1742 d 1820 and they had ten children. John, Richard Jr., James, Eli, Micajah, Archibald, Reuben, Henry, Sarah, and Chloe. His chidren spread over the entire area and are the ancestors of many of the people who live in Mercer, Wyoming, and McDowell County today.
If Zachariah was the son of James BAILEY as the court record states.
Could Elizabeth Hadley have been his mother? Who was Elizabeth Hadley? A mention of another court recored states that Elizabeth Bishop brought a suit against Robert Hadley for marring her when he already had a wife August 20 1796. Peter Bishop, Valentine Kegley, and Philip Phry appeared as witnesses. Maybe if Elizabeth was Zachariah's mother she was unmarried at the time he was born, then married Robert Hadley in desperation. Zachariah was born October 10, 1794 and died April 7, 1884 in McDowell Co WV. James BAILEY was believed to be married to Margaret Stinson at the time, so why did he bind his son, Henry to Elizabeth Hadley, if not that she was the childs mother?
The assumption is James BAILEY binds over his son Henry BAILEY to the keeping of Elizabeth Hadley, until his twenty first birthday, is keeping
the policies that an unmarried woman was unable to legally keep a child.
For James to bind over this child, the child obviously was his son with
Elizabeth. If we assume Elizabeth was in desperation when she married Robert Hadley. Where were her parents? Who could she turn to for help? In yet another court record, Samuel leaves to his wife Elizabeth the revenue from 135 acres to be managed by his good friend Zachariah Scott--the land to go to him upon Elizabeth's death. To leave this land to a friend might mean
he knew of his daughters' death and left the land to his good friend. Also
it seems logical for Elizabeth to name her son after her father's good
friend. Assuming these people are her parents. Why would Samuel leave the land to that friend, if not he had no other living heirs? Was Elizabeth
dead or was she disowned by her parents ? Also a record June 1825 of a
Henry and Jonathan Bishop. Samuel appointed constable . Were these people also her relatives. Again a listing of court records showing Robert Hadley as using bad language with the judge and being expelled from court. All this leads up to Elizabeth being with a man of very bad charater. With an
overbearing husband, she may have taken her small children to make a new
life. Maybe with her flight the two stories are finally coming together.
Maybe Robert HADLEY was so bad, she gathered her sons and set off to relatives some distance away, maybe even Louisanna. Did she make it? In the
family history a Miss Mary BAILEY that was Zachariah BAILEY's mother was going to Louisiana (?Louisa Co VA) with Zachariah and his younger brother Robert. Now it seems most logical her full name could have been Mary Elizabeth. Even the BAILEY part could have been Bishop and was changed in the telling. Also stated Mary was thought to have been a Hopkins, even this fits as Hadley and Hopkins again may have been changed in the telling, as things do down through the generations. Hadley can be forgotten and Hopkins may have come to mind. Also the younger brother Robert. This puzzle piece also fits perfectly, as Robert Hadley being her husband, she would name this child after his father. It's not really amazing how Zachariah drifted into West Virginia where several of his relatives were, as this was a place for opportunity at the time. This next part of the story we know as true, as there are verification without a doubt. It goes as follows.
Zachariah BAILEY enlisted in the war of 1812 in Grayson County, Virginia, and served from Feb. 8, 1812 to March 3, 1815 as a private in Captain Timothy Dauton Co., Zachariah BAILEY and Rachel GLANDON were married in Grayson County, Virginia in the year of 1832, June 18th. Rachel Glandon BAILEY was born September 20, 1813 and joined the Methodist Church June 10th 1820. Mary Vidito was Grandpa Glandon's mother. Grandmother BAILEY's mothers maiden name was Martha HYATT, Rachel Glandon's daddy's name was Jacob Glandon. Zachariah and Rachel were residents of Tazewell Co. Virginia. It was stated in 1859 Zachariah was 65 years old. Later this area became McDowell Co. West Virginia, after 1863. At the time the area was Virginia. A list of land grants, by the stat e of WV in McDowell shows them residents in the year 1844. Zachariah BAILEY and Rachel: 133 Acres East Fork of Tug, in the year of 1868. Cloyd BAILEY, oldest son of John BAILEY, 290 Acres, Jonacake Branch, in the year 1868. Cloyd BAILEY was the oldest son of John BAILEY. Grandson of Zachariah and Rachel BAILEY. Zachariah settled and lived at this place, the headwaters of Tug, Little Creek, Leckie, WV until his death in April 7, 1884. Rachel Glandon BAILEY died in the year 1902. They are both buried in the Blevins Cemetery at Leckie, WV, up the hollow from the old Miller home place.
They had eleven children: Martha R. b 1834, John A. BAILEY b 1835 Mary M. b 1837, Zachariah Jr b 1839, Patrick J. b 1842, Allen Payton, Newman b 1846 Aaron, Lovenia, William R. P. b 1849, James Wesley, and Cosbyanna. A granddaughter was named Louisa
