Bourne, pp 772-773:
[Nathaniel Cousens] was born in 1739 and to him we are indebted for much of our information in regard to the ancient history of the town. He was educated as a carpenter; devoted many years to framing buildings; afterwards labored in the shipyards and in milling, as long as his constitution maintained its strength. In his vigorous years he exercised considerable influence. He was a soldier with his father in the French war of 1755 and at various times, amounting to 4-5 years, in the Revolutionary War, in which he was an ensign, lieutenant, adjutant, and, after the war was over, a major in the militia, having been a captain before the struggle commenced. He was also one of the selectmen of the town, assessor, and many years clerk of the Second Parish. He was endowed with much physical power, gained by the laborious experiences of his life, and lived to the advanced age of 95 years.
Saco Valley Settlements, p 592:
This man [Nathaniel Cousens] learned the carpenter's trade and was much employed as a millwright and in building vessels. He served in the French War and was with Gen. Abercrombie at the attach on Ft. Niagara, working on the breastwork at the time. He was for 4-5 years in the army during the Revolution, serving as ensign, lieutenant, and adjutant, and after returning home became major of the militia. Also served as selectman, assessor, and parish clerk. Being possessed of a retentive memory and a great interest in local events, he was qualified when, in old age, to impart much valuable and interesting information relating to the early history of his town. He was a man of gigantic physical strength; lived to be 95.

Major Cousins began his military career with his father in the French war in 1755. He saw extended service in the Revolution, commissioned as ensign, lieutenant and adjutant. He lived to be ninety-five years of age. (The Ancestry of Lydia Harmon, p. 53)
Major Nathaniel Cousens was for many years one of the most prominent and useful citizens of Wells; he also lived in the part of town known as Kennebunk. His wife was Catharine, daughter of Joshua Lassel, Jr. of Arundel, and grandaughter of Joshua Lassel, a cooper, who removed from York to Arundel in 1723.
We think that Major Cousens was longer in military service during the Indian and Revolutionary Wars than any other inhabitant of the town; he always promptly responded to the call of duty, was fearless and efficient as a soldier and officer, and always merited and received the commendation of his superior officers.
He served as ensign during the first eight weeks at Cambridge in 1775, as first lieutenant at Falmouth in 1776, as adjutant of the regiment in command of Colonel Storer at the taking of Burgoyne that same year, as captain in the expedition to the Penobscot in 1779, and more than two years service in the Revolutionary Army.
In town affairs Major Cousens was held in high esteem. he was one of the selectmen for the long term of twenty-one years, and when he declined a re-election in 1809, a "vote of thanks of the town to Major Cousens for his good services" was unanimously adopted.
He was chosen auditor of the treasurer's accounts, a member of important committees, and by the Second Parish, was regarded as one of the most valuable members.
His daughter Catharine (sic) married Benjamin Wentworth of this town; she was considered to be an excellent woman.
Major Cousens died August 13, 1832 at the age of ninety-five years.
