This surname derives from :

either the Old French word bailli meaning a manager, or administrator of a farm or estate

or from the bail, the walls of the outer court of a feudal castle, in other words some one who lived or worked in the castle court.

These pages are dedicated to my research into the Bailey family of Folkestone, Kent and Odiham, Hampshire. The key member of the family is Richard Bailey, who was born in North Warnborough, Odiham, Hampshire in 1817. He died in Folkestone, Kent in 1892.
