History of Atlantic View Cemetery

Atlantic View Cemetery
Church Street
Manasquan, NJ 08736

It is known that in 1873, a small burying ground was immediately adjacent to the Ocean Hill Church, which had been built in 1842.

The church and burial plot were located on the highest point of land on the north side of Church Street. It is understood that the land was donated from one Nesbit Mount.

In 1875, the Atlantic View Cemetery, Squan Village, was organized and advertised plots of 20 by 16 feet. About this time an additional 10 acres were added to the burying ground from surrounding farmland.

Meeting initially "in the loft over Wainwright and Errickson's store" at Broad and Main Streets. Those involved in the cemetery's incorporation were the Rev. Elias D. Stultz, first resident pastor of the Manasquan Methodist Protestant Church, elected as president; Robert Pearce, vice president; William L. Brown, secretary and Elisha C. Errickson, treasurer.

Trustees of the association were Pitney Curtis, Robert Pearce, Andrew J. Longstreet, Nelson Taylor, William Curtis, and Joseph Wainwright. James Curtis also was present. The Rev. Stultz served as superintendent of the grounds.

Deceased members of many old village families are also found here. Among them are names such as Curtis, Height, Hulsart, Longstreet, Pearce and Wainwright.

Hal Allaire, son of the founder of Howell Iron Works, now the site of The Deserted Village at Allaire, Allaire State Park, also is buried here, as well as many ship captains who were instrumental in achieving recognition of the village by those they dealt with in major ports of call.
