MUSBURY

The first Ayshford of Musbury is William Ayshford b. abt 1694, son of John Ayshford. He married Elizabeth Colbert in 1721. They appear to have had a single son John Ayshford, whom married Anne Baker in 1743. William Ayshford is recorded as a Freeholder in the Parish of Musbury, in the Hundred of Axminster, between 1739 and 1747. In 1741 he is recorded as a Yeoman. In 1749 his son John Ayshford is found recorded as a Freeholder, from which it may be concluded that William Ayshford died between 1747 and 1749 when his son John inherited.

John Ayshford and Anne Baker had nine children of which, according to his will (transcription), only three survived him; Robert, Thomas and Mary. In his will John describes himself as a Gent. He died in 1812 and of his wife Anne, as she is not mentioned in his will, it can be concluded she predeceased him.

In May 1774 John Ayshford had an advert in the Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury for the sale of 'Kingsdown Closes' in Colyton, a nearby market town. John Ayshford is also recorded as a Freeholder in the Parish of Musbury between 1749 and 1780. In 1777 he is recorded as John Ashford Senior, presumably to avoid confusion with his son. It is not clear whether it is he or his son who is recorded thereafter.

John Ayshford, b. 1746, married an unknown Sarah and had three children. Anne, b.1771, who married Benjamin Skinner in 1792 and settled in Colyton. Their other two children, Daniel, b. 1776, and Mary, b. 1783, both died young. John Ayshford died in 1790 and his wife Sarah remarried a Robert Baker in 1792.

Robert Ayshford, b. 1749, moved to East Grinstead in Sussex. In a Directory of 1791 he is recorded as an Excise Officer and his wife as a milliner. Their daughter Ann, b. abt 1799, married William Duke in East Grinstead in 1828.

There is also record of the deaths of a Robert and Louisa Ayshford in Horsham, West Sussex, in 1858 and 1860 respectively. Are they related to Robert Ayshford of Musbury? There is also a record of the christening of a Mary Ayshford Grace, mother Mary Grace, in Horsham on 4th Jan 1775.

A third son, William, was born in 1752 but nothing more is known.

Thomas Ayshford, b. 1755, also married an unknown Sarah and had two children, Thomas, b. 1787, and Elizabeth (Betty), b. 1780. Thomas Ayshford is recorded as a Freeholder in the Parish of Musbury in 1799. Both Elizabeth and Thomas died in 1803 and 1805 respectively, followed by their mother in 1809. Thomas remarries a Nancy Bartlett in Chard, Somerset in 1810 and remains in Musbury. He died in Musbury in 1823.

Mary Ayshford, b. 1757, married William Anning in 1778. She is left ten pounds in her father's will in 1812.

Their last four children; Daniel, b. 1760, must die young as he is followed by another Daniel in 1763. He is followed by Benjamin, b. 1767, but dies the next year, and Elizabeth, b. 1769. Of Daniel and Elizabeth nothing more is known but as they are not mentioned in their father's will we conclude they died before 1812.
