DAVID STURGILL and his wife RACHEL BOGGS first settled on Powells River in Wise County VA about 1823. Their first five children were born here. About 1832 they moved to Letcher County KY near the head of the Cumberland River where their other children were born. About 1855 they returned to Wise Co. and settled in Powells valley where they lived out their lives. Their place of burial is not known.

General Notes: Narrative
The death record of SOLOMON STURGILL in Carter Co, KY shows his parents to be John and Jemima, but many other records indicate that this was an error. No one who could have been Solomon is shown in any census record of John's family but an unidentifed male born in the correct period (1804) is shown in the census records of Francis's family for 1810 and 1820. All of the other children of Francis and Phoebe of Ashe Co, NC have been positively identifed except this one who is believed to be Solomon.
Rebecca Thomkins, Solomon's wife, was born in TN butr they may have been married in Ashe Co, NC, no record has been found. In 1827 Solomon was granted land in Lee Co, VA (area now Wise Co.) In 1833 he mnoved to Harlan Co. KY, later to Greenup Co. (area became Carter Co in 1838). He may have first settled on the land granted to Francis in 1833. Solomon and Rebecca lived out their lives on this farm on Meadow Creek near Willard KY and are buried in a family cemetery on this farm. Census records show their first three children born in VA, the others in KY. pg 78
NOTE: Four of the children of Solomon Sturgill have the same names as the children of Francis of Ashe Co, NC but only two daughters have the same names as John's children. The Sturgill family has a strong tradition of naming children after brothers and sisters - this is another indication that Solomon was a son of Francis and Phoebe. In several interviews with Isom Sturgill he stated that his father Joshua had an older brother who went to KY as a young man and never returned.
Solomon Sturgill, The man who dug his own grave

When I look over the fertile bottoms of the Little Fork Stream in Carter Co., KY., I do not wonder why the Sturgills chose to live in this particular place. On one side of the creek the land rises high and steep, while on the other side the hills rolled gradually into the bottom lands. I would like to have seen it as Solomon Sturgill first saw it. The hills would have supplied wood for fuel, buildings and fences and for making tools and furniture. They would also have supplied food in the form of nuts fruits and wild game, herbs for medicine and mast for hogs. Good springs and small streams provided a bountiful supply of water and the fertile little bottoms were easy to till.
A foot bridge still crosses the stream, as it did over 140 years ago at the very same spot. An 80 year old great grandson of Solomon and Rebecca still lives on part of the original farm which is still as clean and fertile as ever. He is still especially proud of the family cemetery located on a knoll on the "far side" of the creek. He said there were 55 graves in the cemetery, many unmarked, but that he knew the names of most of those who slept there. Sturgill descendants continue to be buried in this cemetery. As he told me things of long ago, he told of the man who dug his own grave.
One day in the fall of 1856, four men, who lived many miles from here, were driving their hogs to Willard, KY. to sell them. Since the day was late and the air was damp and cold, they were looking for a place to spend the night. One man was ill with a hacking cough and said that he was too weak to go much further. As they rounded a bend in the road they saw the home and farm of Solomon Sturgill. As they neared his gate, Solomon went out to meet them and seeing that one was very ill, he agreed to let them spend the night there.
When morning came, the sick man was too weak to even rise from the bed. The other three men left him and went on their way, saying that they would be back to see about him. When they returned late that evening, the sick man was much worse and before morning he died.
In those days there were no such things as funeral parlors and undertakers were only found in the cities. Country people buried their own, and they usually did not wait long to do it. One of the men went on ahead to inform the dead man's relatives, but since his home was many miles away no one was sure that they would come for him. With this in mind, Solomon Sturgill picked a choice grave site in the family cemetery and started digging a grave for the man.
A short time before the burial was to take place, the man's relatives did come for his body. The neighbors said that the empty grave would have to be filled in and offered to help do it. Solomon told them not to bother, that he would do it himself within the next few days.
The next day Solomon himself felt ill, and on the day after that he was feeling even worse. On the third day a doctor was called, and after the examination, he told the family that Solomon had typhoid fever and that there was little hope for him. The open grave had still not been filled.
Afer the doctor left, on Oct 10. 1856, Solomon Sturgill made his will and three days later he was dead. One cannot help but wonder if he had a premonition when he told his neighbors that he would fill the empty grave. He was buried in the same grave he had helped to dig.

ANDREW (Andy) STURGILL and his wife NANCY BOOTH made their home on the Roaring Fork of Powell's River in Wise County, VA where Andy built a two story log house with four fireplaces. All of their children were born in this house and they lived out their lives there. Near his house Andy built a water powered grist mill and country store where he traded in furs and herbs. He was a very prosperous man for his time and at one time owned over 2500 acres of land, most of which his heirs later sold to mining companies. He was a great bee hunter and his lifetime ambition was to have 100 bee hives. 99 was as close as he ever came.
Historical Note: At the end of the civil war a group of weary, hungry and ragged Confederate soldiers, which included a 14 year old boy, were on their way back to KY. (Different accounts give the number from 7 to 12). When they came to Andy Sturgill's house he fed them and they went on up the path a ways where they set up a temporary camp. As Andy feared for their safety he asked the Home Guard to escort them to the KY line. One of the leaders of the Guard, who had lost some property to the Confederate Army during the war, decided to murder the soldiers and ordered them shot as they were. Andy gathered some other neighbors and buried them on the spot. Many years later when a coal mine was opened in the area their bones were found and moved to a near by cemetery. The man who ordered these murders soon left the area in fear for his own life.

Research Notes: Narrative
FRANCIS STURGILL, JR married his wife Rebecca Hall in Ashe Co, NC where they made their first home on a farm on the south fork of New River. The census records of 1830 show that Francis was enumerated in both Ashe Co and Scott Co, VA, as was his father and uncle Francis (now Sr.). Deeds and other records show that he returned to NC before 1832 and remained there through 1845 when his death is recorded in the old South Fork Church book. Some of his descendants say that he was buried in Wise Co, VA but it is more likely that he was buried in the South Fork church cemetery in present Alleghany Co, NC where there are many graves marked only with field stones.
The church records show that Rebecca, widow of Francis, was excluded from the church in 1847 for having an illigitimate child. She then left Ashe Co. and went to Letcher Co, KY where she married a widower, Alexander Hall. -pg 68

Their four oldest sons served in the Confederate Army during the civil war. They participated in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, but all were fortunate enough to survive without serious injury and return home. Three of their first cousins, also Sturgills, died in the war.

JOSEPH KING STURGILL, known as Joel, and his wife Matilda Jones made their home on a farm on Kings Creek. During the civil war, Joel was called to duty with the Confederate Army and none of his family ever heard of him again. In 1953 his grave was discovered in the Confederate cemetery near Richmond VA. Joel had been killed in the battle of Richmond. Matilda never remarried.

CATHERINE ANN STURGILL and her husband, Joshua Weaver, were married in Ashe Co. NC and made their home in adjoining Grayson Co, VA. When her father, Joel, moved to Scott Co. VA about 1836 Joshua and Catherine went with him. In 1841 when Joel migrated to Sullivan Co. MO they again went with him. When most of Joel's family in Missouri decided to migrate to Oregon in 1865 Catherine and Joshua packed up once again and went along. When the Sturgill wagon train finally stopped in Baker Co. OR, Joshua and Catherine staked their claim to a farm on Indian Creek, near Elgin OR, where they lived out their lives. -pg 86

WILLIAM (Big Bill) STURGILL and his wife, Sarah Osborne, remained on the Ashe Co. farm owned by his father when Joel moved to Scott Co. VA about 1838. About the time that Joel moved to Missouri (1841) William and Sarah moved to KY, prbably to Carter Co. where he had close relatives. In 1854 they returned to the Ashe Co. NC farm where they lived out their lives. They are buried in the Lewis Cemetery on Roundabout Creek in Ashe Co. -pg 90
NOTE: The loss of three of their children in Kentucky was probably one of the reasons why William and Sarah decided to return to NC.
NOTE 2: Census records show Sarah b1852 in KY and Joel b.1854 in NC. This places the date William returned to Ashe Co from KY as 1853-54.

JOHN CARTER STURGILL was born in Ashe Co. NC but went to Scott Co. VA and then to Sullivan Co, MO with his father. He met and married his wife Sarah Ann Donoho in Missouri where they made their first home and where their first child was born. About 1852 they moved to Westpoint, Kansas where their other children were born and where Sarah died in 1855. After the death of Sarah, John brought the children back to Missouri to live with their grandparents and then returned to Kansas where he was killed in a cattle stampede a few months later. When their grandmother died in 1864 John's brother took the children and took them to Oregon with him. - pg 93A

LEWIS STURGILL and his wife Lucinda Ward remained in Scott Co. VA when his father, Joel, and the rest of the family went to Missouri. When Joel's family in Missouri went on to Oregon, Joel, being too old to make the trip, returned to Scott Co. to live with Lewis and spent the rest of his life there. Lewis and Lucinda also lived out their lives in Scott Co. and are buried in the Speers family cemetery near Kyles Ford TN. Their children were all born in VA. -pg 93A

From A Branch of the STURGILL FAMILY...
JAMES GEORGE STURGILL went to Missourri with his father's family in 1841. In Sullivan Co, MO he met and married his wife Mary Donoho and in 1850 he brought her back to the Ashe Co. NC farm which his father still owned; their first two children were born in NC. When James' brother William returned to NC from KY in 1854-55 James turned the farm over to him and moved his family to California where he joined the gold rush near Sutters Mill. He died at Oakland CA but his place of burial is not known. - pg93B
James married Mary Donoho from Aug 13, 1848. Mary was born from Mar 19, 1829 and died from Aug 14, 1902 at age 73.

ELIJAH STURGILL was born in Ashe Co. NC. No direct proof was found that he was a son of David Sturgill but this conclusion is supported by family tradition. He went to Harlan Co. KY as a young man where he met and married Emaline Louvina Creech. In 1880 they moved to Wise Co. VA where they lived out their lives. -pg 94
