Descendants of James Butler (760)
Note: the word "county" is omitted after all county names
herein.
Generation One
1. James1
BUTLER (760); m. Susannah Spencer (761); b. 1780.
Susannah SPENCER (761) was born in 1780. Susan Butler 81 enumerated
with Atlas J. Butler (762) on the 1870 census of Carroll, TN; 16th distr.,
house no. 68, ; if this is Atlas' mother Susannah Spencer (761),
this age conflicts with her supposed birthdate of 1780 derived from previous
censuses.
Although most researchers distinguish between this James Butler and James M. Butler, son of Elias Butler, it is possible that the two are actually the same person. For more, click
here to see the report on the other James Butler and the discussion of this subject.
Note a 21 Mar 1836 deed in Carroll Co. TN which tends to establish that one James Butler did have a wife Susannah Spencer; the deed reads as follows: "This is to certify that I have received from George Callicotte, $250.00 - for a certain Negro boy named Solomon and his mother by name of Chaney given to me by will or deed of gift by Hannah Spencer my mother-in-law and my mother" and is signed by James Butler and Susannah (x, her mark) Butler, witnessed by Clark Spencer and John Butler; the Hannah Spencer mentioned here is believed to be the Hannah Sugg who mar. William Spencer, but Hannah (Sugg) Spencer's original will, referred to in this deed, has not come to hand. Clark Spencer who witnessed the deed is probably the son of Hannah (Sugg) Spencer who is believed to have been living in Madison Co. TN at the time, along with other members of the Spencer family; John Butler could be the son of Elias Butler, but this is not certain. Unfortunately, another son of Hannah (Sugg) Spencer was the person who set fire to the Montgomery Co. NC courthouse in Lawrenceville in Mar 1843, destroying records which would have helped greatly in unravelling these families.
Children of James1 Butler (760) and Susannah Spencer
(761) were as follows:
2. i. Atlas J.2 (762), b. 7 Jul
1812 NC; m. Jane M. (or C. J.) (--?--) (763); m. Amelia Huffman (769); m. Susan Jane
Pickler (770).
3. ii. Wiley W. (821), b. circa 1818 Wilson, TN; m.
Nancy Hicks (822) in the fall of 1837 Carroll, TN. May not be a son of James, as a postwar claim by Atlas J. Butler states that Wiley Butler is a cousin.
4. iii. Marvel (811), b. circa 1820 NC; m. Emily Spoon
(812); m. Susan A. Liles (813).
Clark S. Butler is said to be a brother of Seymore Butler and son of this James Butler, but there is no known proof of this; James M. Butler, son of Elias, did have a son Clark S. Butler; If Clark is the brother of Seymore, James Butler and James M. Butler may be the same person (note also that Seymour Butler had a son Clark S.). If this matter could be clarified with period records, perhaps it could be determined whether or not James Butler of this report and James M. Butler, son of Elias, are the same person.
Generation Two
2. Atlas J.2
BUTLER (762) (James1); bur. Spellings
cem.,, Carroll, TN; b. 7 Jul 1812 NC; m. Jane M./C. J. (--?--) (763) circa 1838,
his 1st; m. Amelia Huffman (769), daughter of Michael Huffman (831) and
Milly Keesee (832), 3 Jan 1847 Carroll, TN, his 2nd; T. E. Butler J. P;
m. Susan Jane Pickler (770) 1 Oct 1867, his 3rd, her 2nd; 4 ch; he d. 14
Mar 1878 at age 65.
Parents of one or the other of Atlas and Wiley W. Butler (821) are questionable;
a post-war claim submitted to the Southern Claims Commission by Atlas names a Wiley Butler as a cousin, not a brother
(another Wiley?). In the claim, Atlas Butler claim mentions these relatives who were in either the Union or Confederate army: nephew Marion Butler (CSA) [Francis Marion Butler, son of Marvel]; 3 or 4 brothers of wife, not res. of TN (CSA) [his wife at the time of the claim would have been Susan Pickler, but his wife at the time of the events on which the claim was based would have been Amelia Huffman]; brother-in-law Ely Spoon; and cousins Wiley, Henry, and John Butler (USA) [note that Wiley W. Butler enlisted in 7th TN together with Henry H. and John J. Butler].
Susan Butler 81 enumerated with family on the 1870
census of Carroll, TN; 16th distr., house no. 68; if this is Atlas'
mother Susannah Spencer (761), this age conflicts with her supposed birthdate
of 1780 derived from previous censuses.
Jane M. (--?--) was b. 19 May 1820 and d. 7 Jul 1845 and is bur. in Butler cem. 0.2 mi. NE of Dollar Rd. at Indian Trl. Rd., Carroll, TN. Her name is seen as Jane M. (--?--) on her tombstone and C. J. (--?--) in her marriage record.
Children of Atlas J.2 Butler (762) and C. J. (--?--)
(763) were as follows:
ii. Joel E. (766); b. 11 Jun 1841 TN; d. 7 Dec
1861 Buena Vista, Carroll, TN, at age 20; or d. 1 Dec. He may have
d. in army - Atlas says in a post-war claim that a son was in Confederate
Army.
7. iii. Manerva P. (767), b. 26 Apr 1843 Buena Vista,
Carroll, TN; m. Elijah P. Shipman (768).

on 10 Sep 1827 VA. She died on 28 Aug 1864 Buena Vista, Carroll, TN, at
age 36.
Children of Atlas J.2 Butler (762) and Amelia Huffman
(769) were as follows:
i. Isabella Ann3 (773); b. 25
Mar 1848 TN; m. Benjamin F. Cox (774), son of James E. Cox (775) and Elizabeth
Green (776), 23 Jul 1867; d. 11 Feb 1908 at age 59.
ii. David M. (782); d. St. Louis, St. Louis, MO;
b. 1849; m. M. P. Green (783) 9 Oct 1870. He and Landrum Taylor Butler
(792) lived between 1880 and 1889 St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; where they
had a business.
iii. P. Marilyn (781); b. 10 May 1851; d. 11 Jan
1854 at age 2.
iv. Virginia E. (784); b. 1853; m. Elijah M. Lowery
(785) 25 Feb 1870. She may have had a twin N. W; more probably a
censustaking error showed them with the same age.
v. Lucy Wade (786); b. 22 May 1855; m. Jeremiah
Martin McAuley (787), son of John B. McAuley (279) and Darthula A. Rust
(280), 29 Dec 1870; at least 1 ch; d. 11 May 1946 Buena Vista, Carroll,
TN, at age 90.
vi. N. W. (6124); b. 10 Mar 1857 Buena Vista,
Carroll, TN; d. 1 Nov 1857 Buena Vista, Carroll, TN. Noted as female
in some records - no further data available.
8. vii. Garvin Bell (788), b. 23 Feb 1859 TN; m. Marilyn

Carroll, TN; m. William Melvin McAuley (791), son of John B. McAuley (279)
and Darthula A. Rust (280), 5 Nov 1879 Benton, TN; 10 ch; d. 11 Nov 1937
TX, at age 76. She and Landrum Taylor Butler (792) were twins.
10. x. Nevada Colorado (796), b. 26 Feb 1863 Buena
Vista, Carroll, TN; m. John Luke Cox (797); m. James Wesley Phipps (1861).
Susan Jane PICKLER (770) Kathy Nystrom has parents David and Cyntha Pickler,
but there is also a Susan J., dau. of Eliz., who is the right age in 1850
census. She married William B. Bradbury (771), son of (--?--) Bradbury
(6128) and Nancy Cox (6127); her 1st. She was born in 1846 TN. She died
on 24 Jun 1908 Buena Vista, Carroll, TN.
Children of Atlas J.2 Butler (762) and Susan Jane
Pickler (770) were as follows:
ii. Arden J. (808); b. 1 Feb 1871; d. 21 Feb 1887
Buena Vista, Carroll, TN, at age 16; or d. 2 Feb.
iii. Ranzo (810); b. 4 Jul 1876 Buena Vista, Carroll,
TN; d. 22 Dec 1887 Buena Vista, Carroll, TN, at age 11; or 11 Dec.
iv. Tonia T. (809); b. 27 Mar 1874, d. 27 Jan
1876, bur. Spellings cem. Other researchers say that Tonia grew to adulthood and married; apparently there were two people of this name, the other being Tonia T. Butler, son of James Levi Butler and Laura Reeder, who was b. 1877 and d. 1947 and mar. Addie McAuley. Some sources call this younger Tonia "Jonie", which may be the best reading of the tombstone (but perhaps not accurate)
3. Wiley W.2
BUTLER (821) (James1); m. Nancy
Hicks (822) in the fall of 1837, Carroll, TN; b. circa 1818 Wilson, TN; d. 8 Aug 1864 Andersonville prison,,
Sumter, GA.
Parents of one or the other of Atlas J. Butler (762) and Wiley W. Butler (821) are questionable;
a post-war claim by Atlas names a Wiley Butler as a cousin, not a brother
(another Wiley?). Wiley enlisted 7th TN Cav USA, co. C, apparently enlisting
together with Henry H. and John J. Butler on 17 Aug 1862 Benton, TN. Atlas also stated in the same post-war claim that he had cousins Henry
and John Butler who served in the Union army; could Wiley be their brother?
Nancy (--?--) (822) was born circa 1822 TN.
Children of Wiley W.2 Butler (821) and Nancy Hicks
(822) were as follows:
i. Liana3 (823); b. 1840. She m. 1871 Nathaniel "Shan" Townsend, his 2nd marriage; they res. in Carroll Co. TN in 1884, when Shan Townsend was said by Presley Garner Donaldson to be a formidable marble player. That men in their 40s could enjoy a game of marbles says much for the simpler days of the past.
ii. Aspy (824); b. 1845.
iii. Simeon (825); b. 1847. A Simeon Butler
age 21 appeared on the census of 1870 IL in household of Wm. and Elvina
(Hicks) Donaldson; Elvina (Hicks) Donaldson was the sister of Martha Jane
(Hicks) Butler, wife of Calvin J. Butler. No Simeon or Simon was
found in later IL census indexes; a narrative of his cousin Presley Garner Donaldson places him back in Carroll Co. TN in 1884, married with several children.
iv. Jordan (826); m. Frances (--?--) (4004); b.
1849.
v. Harriet Octavia (827); b. 30 Dec. 1851, Carroll, TN.

vii. Benjamin W. (829); b. 27 Jan 1857, Carroll, TN.

1820 NC; m. Emily Spoon (812), daughter of (--?--) Spoon (8519) and (--?--)
unk (8520), 19 Aug 1841 Carroll, TN; his 1st; m. Susan A. Liles (813),
daughter of Henry Liles (6583) and Elizabeth Diggs (6585), circa 1852;
his 2nd; did this 2nd mar. actually occur in 1860? Check orig. records
on 6 Aug 1860 Carroll, TN. The split of ch. between wives is not
verified.
Note: a Marville Hicks m. Annie B. Bennett 20 Jul 1850 Benton Co. TN.

1854 Rutherford, NC; is this Marvel?
Emily SPOON (812) was born in 1820. She died circa 1850. She was
the sister of Elijah Spoon who m. Sarah Butler. Atlas Butler called
Elijah Spoon brother-in-law in a post-war claim - was Sarah a sister of
Atlas and Marvel, or was this relationship stated because Elijah was brother
of Emily?)
