This Huxford line branches off of my direct line in the 3rd Generation in America. This Joseph Huxford is a half brother to my direct line ancestor, Samuel Huxford (III). I am working with several other researchers on this line. If you connect to this line, and can provide any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.


HUXFORD GENERATION 3 (CONTINUED)


-JOSEPH HUXFORD
He was born in 1728 in Edgartown, Massachusetts, a son of SAMUEL HUXFORD and TEMPERANCE DAGGETT. He married ESTHER EAGAN October 8, 1747 in Glastonbury, Connecticut. She was born a daughter of PATRICK EAGAN and ESTHER LEMONEE and was baptised June 21, 1719 at Brattle Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts. She had first married JOHN HAINES. In 1757 he served with the Militia Company of Edgartown. He died in Glastonbury, Connecticut in November 1804. His estate was administered by his nephew, JOHN HUXFORD, son of PETER and MARY (BUTLER) HUXFORD on November 13, 1804. Esther also died there but her date of death is not known. They had issue below.

- JOSEPH HUXFORD
He was born October 20, 1749 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. He married MARY AREY, a daughter of THOMAS AREY and BEULAH TRAPP, on November 30, 1780 at Edgartown. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Private, fighting at the Battle of Bunker Hill (SAR V133 #26515). He probably was living in Conway, Massachusetts during the war evidenced by his enlistment in a company formed in that town. His gravestone reads: "... in the Battle of Bunker Hill June 17, 1776". The event is correct, but the date is in error by one year. The battle was fought in 1775. She was born January 9, 1746 at Edgartown and died April 13, 1828 at Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts at age 82. He died there April 8, 1843 at age 93. They had issue: (1) Samuel, married Susanna Sprague; (2) Joseph, married Priscilla Brown; and (3) Thomas Arey, married Eliza Brown.

- CORNELIUS HUXFORD
He was born after August 1757 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. (I have been told that his birthdate was May 10, 1752, but in his declaration, mentioned later, he stated on August 1, 1837 that he was born in 1757 and that his was almost 81 years old). He married ANNA WORTH, a daughter of JOHN WORTH and SARAH ATHEARN, in 1773. He was a farmer by trade. He filed for a Revolutionary War pension for service during the was, but I cannot determine if it was ever approved. By his declaration to the court on August 1, 1837, before the Honorable THEODORE G. MAYHEW, Judge of the Probate for Dukes County, Massachussetts, he served at two different periods of time. His first period of service began in May 1776 under Captain BENJAMIN SMITH. He was discharged in November 1776 by order of the General Court in Boston. During his second period of service, which began in May 1777, he was wounded during a march to New York and sent home by his commanding officer, THOMAS FRENCH, with a verbal discharge (R 5460). She was born November 11, 1749 at Edgartown and died October 1, 1843 at age 93. He died in August 1851 in Edgartown. They had nine children, but only one married. I have only been able to determine the names of two children: (1) John, born about November, 1779 and (2) Polly, born January 2, 1795, married William Way.

- ESTHER HUXFORD
She was born about 1754 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. She married her first cousin, HENRY HUXFORD, son of PETER HUXFORD and MARY BUTLER on January 20, 1774 at Glastonbury, Connecticut. She was admitted to the church at Eastbury, a part of Glastonbury, as being from the church in Edgartown, on January 8, 1777. HENRY HUXFORD served during the Revolutionary War (DAR #248918 1928) as a Corporal in the 6th Company, 6th Regiment, under Lieutenant STEPHEN ANDRUSO in 1776. He moved to Glastonbury about 1765 with his parents, and then to Conway, Massachusetts in 1790. He was born about 1752 at Edgartown. His died in Conway and his will was dated November 25, 1815 and proved January 16, 1816. She died in 1819 at Conway, Massachusetts. They had issue: (1) Henry; (2) Samuel; (3) Mary, married William Stow; (4) Marchant; (5) Esther; (6) Sarah; and (7) Achsah, married Chauncey S. Goodrich.

- WILLIAM HUXFORD
He was born in 1755 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. He married EUNICE STRONG, who was born in 1781. During the Revolutionary War he served in the Continental Navy. He died July 9, 1842 and she died in 1848. They had issue: (1) Joseph S., married Unknown Wife; and (2) Harry Ells, married Margaret Maria Nesmith.

- SAMUEL HUXFORD
He was born in 1758 in Edgartown, Massachusetts. Nothing else is known about him, except that he served during the Revolutionary War and died aboard a Prison Ship at New York.

- MARY HUXFORD
She was born about 1760 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. She married her first cousin, JOHN HUXFORD, son of PETER HUXFORD and MARY BUTLER in 1781. He was born in 1754 in Edgartown. He served in the Revolutionary War (DAR #163933) as a Private in Colonel HOSFORD's Regiment and a drummer in Captain DAVID MILLER's Company, 12th Regiment, General Militia. He moved to Glastonbury, Connecticut about 1765 with his parents. He filed his application for a Revolutionary War pension in 1833 in Tolland County, Connecticut, where he was living at the time. He died in 1846 in Tolland County. She died there, but her date of death is not known. They had issue: (1) Caroline, married, first, Chester Andrews, and second, Alfred Strong; (2) Polly, married Daniel Post; (3) Betsy, married William Post; (4) John Dennis, died young; (5) Gibson Williams, married Harriet Wainer; (6) Cornelius; and (7) Hannah Martin, married Ansel Chapman.

- ELIZABETH HUXFORD
She was born in 1762 at Edgartown, Massachusetts. She married RICHARD SKINNER.

- SARAH HUXFORD
She was born in 1764 at Edgartown, Massachusetts and died young.

- JANE HUXFORD
She was born at Glastonbury, Connecticut in 1772. She died February 12, 1819.

He married and had, at least, one son. Nothing further is known of his wife and family. They had issue: (1) Albert.

- HARRY ELLS HUXFORD
He was born in 1809 at Brooks, Maine. He married MARGARET MARIA NESMITH, a daughter of ISAAC NESMITH and MARY M. McCLURE, on February 24, 1838, at Brooks, Maine. She was born in 1814 at Brooks, Maine, and died there in 1900. He died there November 26, 1863. They had issue: (1) James Miller; (2) Norman Bentley, married Ellen Long; (3) Frances Emily, married Charles Henry Treat; and (4) Thaddeus Irish, married Emma Rich.

The children of HARRY EELS HUXFORD and MARGARET MARIA NESMITH

- JAMES MILLER HUXFORD
He was born at Georgetown, Delaware. During the War Between the States, he served in the United States Navy. He went with his brother-in-law, CHARLES HENRY TREAT, to Bath, Maine, and later with TREAT and his family to Delaware where he became a senior partner in the firm Huxford & Co., about 1860.

- NORMAN BENTLEY HUXFORD
He was born November 24, 1850 at Brooks, Maine. He married MARY ELLEN LONG, a daughter of JOHN T. LONG on January 2, 1879. He went with his brother-in-law to Delaware where he was the junior partner in the firm Huxford & Co., and had charge of their branches at Crisfield, Maryland and Cherryfield, Virginia. His brother-in-law, CHARLES HENRY TREAT, was President of Huxford & Co.,andof the C. H. Treat Mfg. Co., the Sussex Mfg. Co., and C. H. Treat & Co. She was born May 3, 1855 and died May 16, 1938, at age 83. He died April 3, 1888 at Georgetown, Delaware, at age 37. They had issue: (1) Harry Norman, married first, Miss Harris, married second, Elizabeth Green McColley; and (2) Alice Bentley, married Norman Topping Gum.

- FRANCES EMILY HUXFORD
She married CHARLES HENRY TREAT. He was Treasurer of the United States during the Roosevelt Administration. They had issue: (1) Mabel; (2) Gail; and (3) Gertrude Margaret.

- THADDEUS IRISH HUXFORD
He married EMMA RICH. They had issue: (1) May Louise; and (2) Alfred Rich.

- HERBERT C. HUXFORD
He was born January 1, 1859 and married CORA MAE SCOTT. They had issue: (1) Clarence; (2) Walter Scott; and (3) Hobart H., married Florence L. Denton.
The children of NORMAN BENTLEY HUXFORD and MARY ELLEN LONG:

- HARRY NORMAN HUXFORD
He was born October 3, 1879 at Franford, Delaware. He married first, Miss HARRIS. They divorced and he married second, ELIZABETH GREEN McCOLLEY, a daughter of JOSEPH OSBORNE McCOLLEY and LAURA LEE LONG, on November 13, 1918 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Navy at the age of sixteen and served in the Spanish-American War, Tampico, Mexico, and the Boxer Uprising in China. During World War II, he was promoted to Lieutenant and made Commanding Officer of the USS Lebanon, Atlantic Fleet. He was cited for bravery and received the Navy Cross. He died January 26, 1927 at Philadelphia, at age 47. She was born May 4, 1890 at Frankford, Delaware and died August 20 1969 at Ocean City, Maryland, at age 79. There was no issue by his first marriage. By his second marriage, there was issue:(1) Mary Elizabeth, and (2) Harry Norman, Jr.
