He is my oldest "proven" direct line Ballentine ancestor. He was born about 1781 in the St. James Goose Creek Parish of South Carolina. In about 1812 he married RULANEY [ Unknown ]. She was born about 1792. He died February 17, 1859. Her date of death and their burial location is unknown. They had issue below. (Generation 2)

She was born about 1812 in the Sumter District of South Carolina, and married about 1828 SAMUEL W. JOYNER. They had issue: (1) John W., (2) Tymothy, (3) Sarah R. and (4) Samuel W. Joyner, Jr.

-JOSHUA BALLENTINE
He was born about 1813 in the St. James Goose Creek Parish of South Carolina and married about 1838 SUSANNAH [Unknown] . They had issue: (1) Frances, (2) Margaret, (3) Davis O., and (4) Charles N. Ballentine.

-REBECCA BALLENTINE
She was born about 1816 in the St. James Goose Creek parish of South Carolina and married about 1834 JAMES HOWARD DROZE . He was born about 1804 in the Sumter District of South Carolina. They had issue: (1) Thomas W., (2) Laurel A., (3) Elizabeth, (4) Laura, (5) Mary Ellen, (6) John S., (7) Henry F., (8) William E., (9) Crowel C., and (10) Harriet R. Droze.

- ELLENDER "ELLEN" BALLENTINE
She was born about 1819 in the Sumter District of South Carolina and married November 7, 1841 in Savannah, GA to DAVID STOKES. He was born about 1817 in the Sumter District, was a veteran of the Mexican War and died October 10, 1876 in Burke County, GA. She died April 19, 1906. They had issue: Flavius Joseph Stokes.

-RULANEY BALLENTINE
She was born about 1823 in the St. James Goose Creek Parish and married in 1840 JOHN ENOS FULTZ. He was born in 1812 in St. John's Berkeley Parish of South Carolina. He was the son of William Fultz and Diannah (probably) Roberts. He died in 1858. They had issue: (1) Sarah Diana (married John Middleton Parker), (2) Ellen E. (married 1) Theodore John Stoudemaier, 2) Samuel W. Rourk), (3) John Enos, Jr. (married 1) Sarah Elizabeth Ballentine, 2) Annie Maria Winter), (4) Thomas Frederick (married 1) Jane V. [Unknown], 2) [Unknown] Singletary), (5) Mary Jane (married 1)Robert McCants, 2) Samuel Veronee), (6) Cynthia O., (7) Gustavus Adolphus (married Julia Cynthia Ballentine), (8) Joshua George Henry (married Annie [Unknown]), (9) Rulaney R. (married John Wesley Orvin), and (10) Laura Lu (married William J. Austin).

-   JOHN JAMES BALLENTINE
He was born March 10, 1827 in the St. James Goose Creek Parish of South Carolina and married MARY ELIZABETH HUXFORD December 25, 1843. She was born August 28, 1825, daughter of PETER HUXFORD (SR.) and SARAH GARLINGTON. He served in the Confederate States Army as a private in Company D, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, enlisting on September 1, 1863. On January 12, 1865 he was furloughed to Summerville, South Carolina because of "Severe burns of both hands and face - caused by explosion of gun powder at Battery Anderson Jany 1/65..." (This date may have been January 11, 1865.) Battery Anderson was located at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. After his enlistment, the 2nd South Cavalry was commanded by Colonel Thomas J. Lipscomb, due to General M. C. Butler's being wounded at Brandy Station, June 9, 1863. They participated in the Bristoe Campaign, October 9-10, 1863, and the Mine Run Campaign, November 12, 1863. The 2nd South Carolina Cavalry returned to South Carolina in May 1864. After that they saw duty at Fort Fisher, North Carolina, January 3-15, 1865, the Carolina Campaign, February 4, 1865 and finally at Bentonville, North Carolina on March 19-21, 1865. I have not been able to determine if he was well enough to return to his unit before the end of the war. Two of his sons, Andrew and Lewis, also served in the Confederate States Army. He died May 24, 1887. She died January 11, 1894 and both are buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Church Cemetery in Berkeley County, South Carolina. They had issue below . (Generation 3)

He was born about 1831 in the St. James Goose Creek Parish and no further is known of him.

-LEWIS E. BALLENTINE
He was born February 10, 1845 in the Charleston District, South Carolina. He was a Civil War veteran serving in Company D, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry from February 7, 1862 until November of December 1864. He died September 28, 1923.

- SARAH ELIZABETH BALLENTINE
She was born August 10, 1846 in the Charleston District of South Carolina. She married JOHN ENOS FULTZ, JR. May 11, 1865. He was born November 12, 1844 in St. John's Berkeley Parish, South Carolina, the son of JOHN ENOS FULTZ and RULANEY BALLENTINE. They moved to Florida where he she died June 16, 1888 and is buried in Cocoa Cemetery, Cocoa, FL. He remarried to ANNIE MARIA WINTER in 1892. She was the daughter of DAVID McCANTS WINTER and MARY FULTZ HARVEY. He died December 27, 1921 and is buried in Oslo Cemetery, Vero Beach, FL. They had issue:

-ANDREW BALLENTINE
He was born May 5, 1848 in the Charleston District, South Carolina. He married CATHERINE WOOD HARVEY January 25, 1875. She was born December 25, 1848 daughter of JOHN ARNOLD HARVEY and CATHERINE B. SMITH. He served in the Civil War with Company D, 3rd (Palmetto) Battalion, South Carolina Light Artillery. He enlisted as a minor December 23, 1864 and was paroled May 1, 1865. During his service his "left leg crushed now crippled and in poor health" entitled him to the pension he received until his death. He was Probate Judge of Berkeley County, South Carolina for almost 20 years. She died 21 January 1894 and he died October 30, 1922. Both are buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Church Cemetery, South Carolina. They had issue: (1) Mary Ruth (married John W. Myers, (2) Enos Elliot (married Innis Lorena Willson), (3) Clarence E. (married Anna Lee Murray), (4) Ida G. (died young), (5) Zada E. (married Edward Lee Winter), (6) Hattie Lee (married James William Mims), (7) Daisie E. (married James Hardin Law), (8) Connie E. (died young) and Bessie E. (died young).

- PETER HUXFORD BALLENTINE
He was born June 27, 1851 in the Charleston District, South Carolina. He married AMARINTHA ALICE HUXFORD December 22, 1870. She was born May 14, 1846 daughter of PETER HUXFORD (JR.) and LYDIA ANN CALVITT. He died April 9, 1893 and she died in July 1913. He is buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Cemetery, South Carolina and she is buried in the Russellville Christian Church Cemetery, South Carolina. They had issue: (1) Lucierne Iris, (2) Frances Marion (married Charles Radford Newton), Josephus Calvert (married Sophia Cornelia Youmans) and (4) Mary Elizabeth (married 1) Mr. Murdaugh, 2) William Kennighan.

He was born February 1, 1854 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. He married first GEORGIANAH STROBLE BROWNLEE February 8, 1874. She was born December 23, 1853 daughter of JAMES WESLEY BROWNLEE and ELIZABETH J. PACKER and died September 29, 1899. He married second ORPHA SUSAN MURRAY January 17, 1901. She was born March 20, 1878 daughter of ARTHUR MURRAY and MARY WINTER and died in childbirth February 16, 1914. He married third ANGIE WINNINGHAM. He died April 4, 1924 in the Dorchester Township, South Carolina and is buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Cemetery, South Carolina. They had issue below. (Generation 4)

He was born March 22, 1856 in the Charleston District, South Carolina. He died October 25, 1881.

- JULIA CYNTHIA BALLENTINE
She was born August 14, 1858 in the Charleston District, South Carolina. She married first GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS FULTZ February 24, 1876. He was born October 2, 1852 son of JOHN ENOS FULTZand RULANEY BALLENTINE. He died March 5, 1887 and is buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Cemetery, South Carolina. She married second WILLIAM J. AUSTIN September 22, 1889. He was son of WILLIAM W. AUSTIN. He died March 30, 1910 and is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She died November 14, 1929 and is buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Cemetery, South Carolina.

She died in 1934. He died January 13, 1940 and both are buried in the Wassamassaw Baptist Cemetery, South Carolina. They had issue: (1) Sidney Grover (married Mazie Ruth Clarke), (2) Ethel Gertrude (married 1) George Washington Murray, 2) Gussie Young DeHay), (3) Lewis Edward (married Lottie R. He died December 27, 1939 in Florence, South Carolina and is buried in the St. Stephen Episcopal Cemetery, South Carolina. She died May 30, 1968 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina and is also buried there. They had issue below. (Generation 5)
