Patrick Ballantine, gunsmith of Charles Towne, SC
Return

GENERATION 1

This is the first Ballentine family that I can find in the Charleston area. Charles Clinton, gunsmith of Charles Towne said in his will dated January 14, 1690/1 and probated September 28, 1691,"I give and bequeath to Patrick Valentine all my working tools & instruments whatsoever belonging to my trade of a Gun Smith." I have been unable to determine any family connections between Patrick and Charles Clinton. The only relative he mentions in his will is his "beloved daughter Forrester Clinton in the Island of Barbados." In his will dated September 15, 1720, Patrick does not mention a wife as she probably died before his writing of the will. He mentions only two sons, John and James and a grand-daughter "Catheron Vanoelson".

Although I feel that it must exist, I have not been able to make a definite connection to my Ballentine line in Berkeley County. Others have suggested connections but I have either found documents to disprove these links or not found enough proof to verify them. I am providing here the information that I have collected.

Each of these families surely had more children as was the custom of the day. However, these are all that I have been able to identify with each family.

-PATRICK B. BALLANTINE
He was born about 1645. He was a gunsmith in Charles Towne, South Carolina and died there in September 1720. His will is dated September 15, 1720 and can be found in Charleston County Probate Court Records, Volume 1, page 35. He mentions no wife in his will and she probably predeceased him. In his will he mentions a thirty foot front of his lot at White Point with a shop on it to go to his grand-daughter, "Catheron Vanoelson". Half of his dwelling house, a lot in Providence and a small tract of land that is on Port Royal, to go to his son, John. To his son James he bequeathed an iron pot and the other half of the lot and dwelling house on White Point. He had issue below.
