Donauschwaben Yankee Doodle Dandy |
---|
This one I call, "Donauschwaben Yankee Doodle Dandy" and is my personal favorite. My uncle, Adam Mayer, a redhead, is shown two years after his arrival in the U.S., on July 4, 1910, after marching in the parade as a member of St. Fidelis' Fife & Drum Corps. He was born in Mercydorf 1903, and in 1904, was left with his Grandmother when his parents came to the US. They planned to return for him as soon as they were settled, but two more pregnancies quickly transpired. Finally, my Grandmother went back for him in 1908, with my mother in tow. When it came time for them to return home, Adam, then 5, was heartbroken and inconsolable for weeks. He called his Grandmother, "Mutter", and didn't want to leave her. Today, he's approaching 97, in good health (no medications!) still sharp of mind and wit, and still has an eye for the ladies. |
