Johann George Menz c.1817
Generation No. 1
J OHANN
GEORGE MENZ
b. about 1817,
was named as (father) on a marriage certificate of his son
Johann Friedrick Ephraim Menz in 1866.

Johann Friedrich Ephraim Menz c.1837
&
Marie Elisabeth Hante
Generation No. 2
Born c.1837: J OHANN
FRIEDRICH EPHRAIM MENZ
known as 'Friedrich'
'Fritz' 'Fred'
Father: Johann George Menz
Mother: - name
unknown.
-
JFE Menz signed his marriage certificate
as 'Friedrich Menz' and gave his age at the time as
29 - making his birth about 1837.
-
Shipping arrival
information for Friedrich was from Tucheim,
Magdeburg, Germany, and would have been born about 1837.
Arrival in
Australia aboard ship 'ADOLF': For some years I
couldn't prove JFE Menz & his to be wife M E Hante
came on the ship 'Adolf'. I was pretty sure it to be
them. The finding of M E Schultz formally Menz
Naturalisation at age 65 proved me to be correct.
JFE Menz left
from Hamburg aboard the ship 'ADOLF in December 1865
[see newspaper item left of page] arriving at the
Port of Adelaide SA on 20th February 1865 [see
newspaper item right of page]. Fritz Mentz
aged 28 years listed as Passenger no. 41,
Occupation 'Arbeiter/Labourer' from Tucheim, Kries,
Grenthin, Prussian Saxony.
Along with him was Passenger no. 42 Fredrrich Menz aged
16 years a blacksmith, from the same place and
possibly related.
Another
passenger on the ship was passenger no. 36, a young pregnant girl
Elizabeth Hante aged 19 years, also from
Tucheim, Kries Grenthin, who became Fritz/Friedrich's wife on the 9th March 1866 17
days after their arrival.

Newpapers
South Australia Left: Adolf departing Hamburg &
Right: Arrival Adelaide

Marriage: Johann 'Friedrich'
Ephraim Menz aged 29yrs married
pregnant 19year old Marie 'Elisabeth' Hante on 9th March 1866 at the
residence of Mr Neundorf / Neindorf a farmer of Kingsbelt in the
district of Gawler South Australia.
George Neundorf /
Neindorf was a
witness to the marriage. His grandparents were
George Neindorf & a Catharina Elisabeth Menz.
It's very
probable Catharina Neundorf nee Menz was a relation of
Friedrich Menz's father.
Marriage certificate 9th March
1866
Please Note:
Information
about Johann Friedrich Ephraim Menz in the South Australian Biological
Index is incorrect.
The Biological
Index has his parents
as Friedrich Peter Menz & Maria Sophie Beelitz.
JFE Menz stated
on his marriage certificate his father was Johann George Menz
& his mother unnamed.

Wife Born: MARIE ELISABETH HANTE was born 6th
November 1845 at Tucheim a village and a former municipality in
the Jerichower Land district, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Father: Johann
Friedrich HANTE [other spellings found Handt - Hunter]
Mother: Unnamed.
Shipping: Marie Elizabeth stated on her
Naturalization papers she
arrived on the ship 'Adolf' 20th February 1865 [This date
should be 1866 - Adolf left Hamburg in Dec 1865]. Also on
the voyage were a Fritz Menz soon to become her husband, and a Frederick Menz.
Death of Johann 'Friedrich'
Ephraim Menz: Friedrich died some time between
his marriage in March 1866 and his wife's remarriage
in February 1868.
The only death
registration which fits Friedrich Menz death in SA for
1866-67 is a Friedrick Menz dying at the Adelaide Hospital
South Australia on 25th August 1867. His age noted as
29yrs. The cause of death
noted as Hepatitis. No other details are given on the
death certificate.
The Adelaide hospital admission
register states this Friedrich was 30year old (this age
fitting his age at marriage), occupation labourer,
address Lyndoch Valley SA,
religion P, born Mecklenburg Germany (Shipping list gives
place as Tucheim which isn't that far from Mecklenburg), 2years
6months in the colony (fits with arrival February 1865),
and marital status single?. Even though the
hospital admission register states marital status as
'Single' I believe this to be my great great grandfather.
His death registration must have also been fill in by an informant
who knew nothing about him as most
columns on the death certificate were left blank. Friedrich
was buried at West Terrace Cemetery SA.

NOTE: Tracing my Menz family
has been a task and if anyone has any suggestions or think
they may be connected I would appreciate help in sorting
out the facts. My Johann Friedrich Ephraim Menz doesn't
fit with any Menz families I have had contact with in
Australia. It was first thought he belonged to Peter Menz
but his marriage certificate notes his father as Johann
George Menz.
The Hante Family is proving
just as difficult to trace any help here would also be
appreciated.
