Descendants of Marianno Barbi 1850 - 1909

Generation No. 1

1. MARIANNO1 BARBI was born Abt. 1850 in Italy, and died Bef. 1909 in Italy. He married ROSA ALBERGHINI Bef. 1870 in Italy. She was born 1847 in Renassa, Ferrara, Italy, and died 25 Feb 1916 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Notes for MARIANNO BARBI:

There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named: The first male is named after his paternal grandfather, the second male is named after his maternal grandfather, the first female is named after her paternal grandmother, and the second female is named after her maternal grandmother. The subsequent children could be named after the parents, a favorite aunt or uncle, a saint or a deceased relative. Source: "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" by Lynn Nelson, page 18.

Notes for ROSA ALBERGHINI:

According to 1910 Census (data shown under Antonio Barbi), Rosa emigrated to the United States in 1909. This was probably after her husband, Marianno's, death. Passenger Ship List for SS Verona departing Geonoa, Italy, on October 16, 1909, (arriving New York on October 31, 1909, see notes for Delfa Malavasi) shows Rosa Alberghini traveling with Delfa Malavasi; and Delfa's children, Rosina Barbi, Mariano Barbi, Aldo Barbi, and Maria Barbi (just born in Italy).

The Marriage Certificate for Antonio Barbi and Carolina Serra shows Antonio's mother as Rosa Mengaredi. The Marriage Certificate for Federico Barbi and Delfa Malavasi shows Federico's mother as Rosa Alberghini. Since there is a question as to the maiden name for Carolina's mother Mocari vice Bocari, Antonio may also have gotten his mother's maden name wrong too. Delfa's signature is the same as witness on Antonio's marriage certificate and on Federico's marriage certificate as bride.

See notes under Frederick Barbi regarding the 1920 US Census. Rosa was not listed so I am assuming she died before the 1920 Census. In 1915, she was listed in the New York State 1915 Census. This fact was confirmed by the death certificate obtained in June 2004 at the New Jersey Archives that she was born in 1847 and died 25 February 1916.

She is burried at Hudson County Catholic Cemetery (In 2004 Holy Name Cemetery) 823 West Side Avenue, Jersey City, NJ

Marriage Notes for MARIANNO BARBI and ROSA ALBERGHINI:

The Marriage Certificate State of New York number 6716, March 4, 1911, for Antonio Barbi and Carolina Serra shows Anotonio Barbi's parents as Marianno Barbi and Rosa Mingaredi. In Kenneth Barbi's "Baby's Milestones Birth to Seven Years" compiled by Margaret Barbi, Daniel Barbi is listed as Antonio Barbi's father and no name is listed for his mother. In December, 2000, Margaret Barbi did not recall why this information was recorded in this manner.

SPAARNDAM

Spaarndam

The "Spaarndam" of the Holland America Line was built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast (engines by J.Jack & Co, Liverpool) in 1881 as the "Asiatic" for the White Star Line, she was a 4,368 gross ton ship, length 427.8ft x beam 41.9ft, one funnel, four masts (rigged for sail), single screw and a speed of 13 knots. Launched on 30/4/1881, her name was changed to "Arabic" and she left Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 10/9/1881. She started her third and last voyage on this service on 2/12/1881. She was then chartered to the Occidental & Oriental Line and sailed on 4/2/1882 from Liverpool for Suez Canal, Hong Kong and San Francisco. On 30/3/1887 she returned to the N.Atlantic and sailed from London for Queenstown and New York and on 12/5/1887 resumed Liverpool _ New York sailings. She reverted to San Francisco _ Yokohama _ Hong Kong voyages in 1888 and in 1890 was sold to Holland America Line. Renamed "Spaarndam", she started her first Rotterdam _ New York voyage on 29/3/1890. In 1899 she was refitted to carry 2nd and 3rd class passengers only and commenced her final voyage on 7/2/1901 when she left Rotterdam for New York. She was scrapped at Preston the same year. Frederick Barbi lived at 485 Boulevard, LIC, New York, when he married Delfa Malavasi on July 27, 1899. Their first 2 children, Rosy and Mario were born at 227 Sullivan Street, New York City, however, the 1910 US Federal Census shows Frederick and Delfa lived at 592 Boulevard, LIC, New York, on Apr 28, 1910. The 1900 US Federal Census does not show Frederick and Delfa at either address. Based on appearing in the New York State 1915 Census, we assume Frederick and his family moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, between 1915 and 1920. Delfa Barbi Dunlap confirmed that her recollection from family members is that Frederick Barbi came from Modena, Italy. Modena is a city near Bologna as well as being the province name for that part of Italy. Based on Anthony Barbi's passenger ship manifest listing him as coming from Mirandola, Italy, (which is close to Modena city) and in Modena Province, we have good agreement on family origin location.

Notes for DELFA MALAVASI:

Birth and death dates obtained from SSN Death Information.

According to Delfa Barbi Dunlap, Delfa came from a well to do family in Italy and had servants.

According to Delfa and Federico Barbi marriage certificate, her parents were Bonfiglio Malavasi and Sophia Gazzelli. According to www.ellisislandrecords.org passenger ship lists, Bonfiglio Malavasi came to the United States aboard SS America on 26 Jul 1915 at age 56 showing his residence as Mirandola, Italy.

She orginally came to the United States on August 10, 1896, aboard the SS La Normandie. Her name was misspelled on indexes as Belfa Malavati. She was listed as passenger 141 in the Aft Steerage Compartment and was a 17 year old laborer. Delfa married Ferderico Barbi in July 27, 1899. She had 3 children (Rosie, Mario, and Aldo) in New York City. Then she traveled back to Italy with Rosie, Mario, and Aldo Barbi, prior to 1908 to have Mary in 1908. Delfa (age 29 _ _ born in 1880 in Cavezzo, Modena, Italy) returned to the United States aboard the SS Verona leaving Genoa, Italy, on October 16, 1909, with her 4 children, and her mother_in_law Rosa Alberghini Barbi (age 63 _ _ born in 1846 in Renassa, Ferrara, Italy ) who was living with her brother Luigi Alberghini in Cento [I assume she moved in with her brother after her husband Marianno died before she emigrated to the United States]. The Verona arrived in New York on October 31, 1909. Her 4 children were listed as coming from Cento, Ferrara, Italy. Delfa traveled under her madden name as Delfa Malavasi, and was said to have lived with her father Bonfiglio Malavasi in Mirandola, Italy. ["Italians to America _ List of Passengers Arriving in US Ports, 1880_1899, Vol 10", page 31, Editor Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby, published by Scholarly Resources 2000, lists Belfa Malivasi on the SS Verona, but after reading the actual passenger list, it is an editorial error on the part of Glazier and Filby.] The passenger list shows Delfa and Rosa were returning to the United States to live with Federico Barbi who lived at 53 East 9th Street, Manhattan, New York in 1909 (don't forget the 1910 US Census shows Federico Barbi living at 592 Boulevard, LIC, New York). Kaiser Wilhelm II

According to the actual passenger list of the Kaiser Wilhelm II on 28 April 1898, Antonio Barbi was going to stay with his brother in New York__which 1910 US Census Records confirm.

Anthonio Barbi submitted a Naturalization Request in Queens County, New York. It is in Vol 54B Petition Number 12399. The "A" volumes range from 1906_1926. The "B" volumes range from 1927_1941.

Anthonio's parents were listed as Marianno Barbi and Rosa Mengaredi; Carolina's parents were listed as Seradona Serra and Elisa Mocari. Witnesses were Pietro Serra (her cousin) and Delfa Barbi (her sister_in_law). [It should be noted here that Antonio's brother, Frederic's marriage certificate lists parents as Mariano (1 "n") Barbi and Rosa Alberghini. I think the last names on Antonio and Carolina's marriage certificate for the mothers are wrong.]

Death Certificate State of New York number 44642 dated August 1, 1950, says Anthony died in Smithtown, Long Island, New York on July 29, 1950. He was a resident of Queens at 140_35 Loburmm Avenue, Flushing, New York. His usual occupation was maintenance in the building business. Father's name was Marino, and mother's name was unknown.

Mirandola, Italy, is in Modena province of the Emilia_Romagna region in north central Italy. It has automobile assembly, footwear, food_canning, and hemp industries. The Romanesque_Gothic church of S. Francesco is a historic landmark. The town was the birthplace of Pico della Mirandola, the 15th_century scholar. Pop. (1984 est.) mun., 21,979.

Pico Della Mirandola, Giovanni, Conte (1463_94), Italian humanist philosopher, born near Ferrara, and educated at the University of Bologna. Instead of completing his studies at Bologna he visited famous universities in Italy and France, astonishing scholars with his precocious learning. At the age of 23 he settled in Rome and there publicly posted a list of 900 theses or propositions about all subjects, offering to defend them publicly. The pope deemed that some of his theses dealing with cabalistic magic were heretical and forbade him to carry on his projected discussions. In 1489 Pico completed the Heptaplus, a mystical account of the creation of the universe. His library was one of the largest and most comprehensive of his day. A wealthy man, he eventually decided to give away all his possessions and become a wandering preacher, but he died before he could carry out his plan. The year before his death Pope Alexander VI absolved him of any imputations of heresy.

Mario and Margaret Barbi

Margaret and Mario Barbi in 1935 Wedding Picture

Notes for MARIO ALFREDO BARBI:

Mario Barbi met Margaret Koenig at a movie theater in 1930 when Mario was 18 and Margaret was 17 through mutual friends. They dated for 5 years before they got married in 1935. After they married, they moved in with Mario's father (Antonio) and brother (Daniel) at 147_16 15th Drive, Whitestone, New York, and lived their for 1 or 2 years before moving into an apartment in Kew Gardens, New York. Mario's mother Carolina had been committed to an asylum prior to 1935 [actually September 1932 according to Caroline Barbi's death certificate] and did not live in Whitestone at the time. Caroline was put into the asylum because her son, Daniel, was gay, and she couldn't cope with it. In 1939, Mario and Margaret moved to 141_07 73 Avenue, Flushing, New York.

Source: Margaret Barbi, February 2001, and May 2001.

After WW 2, Mario worked for John Hancock Insurance Company until his retirement. On the wedding announcement, Mario's middle name is written as Albert. On his Birth Certificate number 1603 State of New York, the birth date is shown as March 6, 1912. Mario always celebrated his birth day on March 6th. On Mario's Baptismal and death certificate his birthday is shown as March 5, 1912. No record at 105 Graham Avenue (where Mario A. Barbi was born in 1912) in 1915 New York Census of any Barbi family living there__page that applies is Block X ED 20, Page 8. See note under Antonio Barbi showing Antonio, Carolina, Mario, and Eunice [Inez] living at 72 Camelia, Astoria, New York, in 1920 US Federal Census. On back of Mario's Baptismal Certificate is the address 147_16 15th Drive, Whitestone, New York, where it is presumed he lived in the 1930's prior to his marriage to Margaret. No record in the 1925 New York Census, of any Barbi family living at 147_16 15th Drive, Whitestone, New York.

More About MARIO ALFREDO BARBI:

Baptism: 06 Oct 1912, Missione di S. Carlo Boromeo 210_214 Bleecker Street, New York

Burial: 09 Apr 1983, Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, New York, Section 31 Grave 2229

Notes for MARGARET VERONICA KOENIG:

Margaret Koenig was born at home on East 10th Street in 1913, and went to the New York Eye and Ear Hospital for care after her birth to have her tonsils removed after her birth. By 1918, her family had moved to 304 East 92nd Street. Baptismal Certificate and derived Birth Certificate number 28828 State of New York show birth date of October 8, 1913. Margaret assures her birth date is really October 12, 1913, which she has always celebrated. Margaret attended Julia Richman High School (an all_girls school then) on 68th Street and 1st Avenue. Margaret lived on 92nd Street in Yorkville. For 5 cents she could take the subway to get to school. Sometime she'd save her nickel to buy ice cream by walking home.

In the early 1930's Margaret earned $18 per week as a stenographer (typing/shorthand) for a male boss in downtown Brooklyn for the Lester Piano Company. Lester Piano was a Pennsylvania firm that had stores on the East coast. This money helped her family during the hard times of the Depression.

Mario A. Barbi in 1982

In 1939, Margaret moved into her current home at 141_07 73 Avenue, Flushing, New York, also known as Kew Garden Hills, New York. She then worked for Wheeler Shipbuilding in Whitestone, NY, during WW 2, as a secretary. Wheeler Shipbuilding made PT boats. In the early 1940's, Margaret went to work for the Overhead Door Company for a short time. Then her brother, William Koenig, got her a job at Sperry Gyroscope Company in Garden City, Long Island, which built analog computer_controlled bomb sights and ariborne radar systems. Until her retirement in 1978, she was an executive secretary for a number of insurance companies in New York City.

When her son, Kenneth, was born in 1945, she left work to raise him. Her husband, Mario, had been drafted in to the Army where he was assigned to the Signal Corps. Because Margaret had a blood clot during her pregnancy, Doctor Goldstein (attending physician) asked the Red Cross to curtail Mario's assignment to California en route to the Pacific war zone. Mario was assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for the duration of WW 2.

This information was provided orally by Margaret Barbi to Kenneth Barbi on July 24, 2000.
