In his will dated 4 November 1707, proved 7 January 1707/8, James Gorham named his loving wife, Hannah, his seven sons, John, Thomas, James, Joseph, Jabez, Silvanus and Ebenezer, who were all living, and his three daughters, Desire Springer, who received £20, Expeience Lothrop, who was given £5, in addition to what she had already received, and Mehitable Gorham, who was also given £5. 234

In the will of his father, James Gorham: “In ye name of God Amen ye 4th day of November 1707, I James Gorham of ye town and county of Barnstable in New England, being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, praised be God, and knowing ye undertainty of this life on earth, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following:
. . . Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Hannah one third part of my moveable estate to her sole dispose forever and ye western half of my dwelling house furing her natural life. Item. I give and bequeath to my son John Gorham all my land and meadow at South Sea in Yarmouth, he paying to my executor hereafter named twenty pounds in current money of New England within four years after my decease toward ye paying my debts. . . Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Experience Lothrop five pounds of my estate beside what she hath had already. . . . In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal ye day and year first above written

“John died in West Yarmouth, Mass., at 49 years of age, between 20 July 1729, the date he made his will, and 5 November 1729, the date his will was probated. John Gorham married in Barnstable 14 February 1705/6 Ann Brown, who was born in Ireland and is said to have come to Massachusetts with her brother. Ann died after 26 February 1729/30, the date she and her son, Matthis, were directed to take an inventory of her husband’s estate. John Gorham’s father, James Gorham, in his will dated 4 November 1707, gave John his land and meadow at South Sea in Yarmouth.” 234

“John Gorham of Yarmouth, yeoman, in his will dated 20 July 1729, proved 5 November 1729, gave his loving wife,Ann, one-third of all of his real and personal estate and said that it was to be at her disposal during her natural life or until her remarriage. He gave his son, Matthias Gorham, all of his real estate in the township of Yarmouth, with the provision that he pay several legacies to his sisters. He gave his daughter, Mercy Crowell, wife of Ebenezer Crowel, six shillings besides what she had already been given, as her full portion. He gave his four other daughters, Desire Gorham, Rose Gorham, Elizabeth Gorham and Ann Gorham, £20 each, to be paid to them as they reached the age of eighteen years of were married, whichever should happen first. He gave his two grandchildren, James Crowell and Temperance Crowell, children of his daughter Mercy Crowell, ten shillings each, all legacies to be paid by his son, Matthias Gorham. His wife, Ann Gorham, and his son, Matthias Gorham, were named executors. Witnesses were Shubael Baxter, Ebenezer Parker and Elizabeth Baxter. The will was presented for probate 5 November 1729, and sworn to by Shubael Baxter and Ebenezer Parker. On 5 February 1729 [1729/30], the will was sworn to by the third witness, Mrs. Elizabeth Baxter. On 25 February 1729 [1729/30], Ann Gorham and Matthias Gorham were accepted as executors and directed to take an inventory, which amounted to £350-0-0. The witnesses to the inventory were Shubael Baxter, Ebenezer Parker and Samuel Marchant. John Gorham’s children were listed among the heirs of his unmarried brother, Silvanus Gorham of Stamford, Conn., whose estate was distributed 18 January 1750/1. They were allotted £132-19-9.” 234

“His [John’s] will is dated July 20th, 1729, proved Nov. 3 following, showing that he died that year. He names his wife Ann, son Matthias, and daughters Mercy, Desire, Rose, Elizabeth and Ann. In the distribution of the Estate of his brother Silvanus at Stamford, Conn. Jan. 18, 1750/51, £132/19/9 was allotted to the legal representatives of John Gorum dec (Probate Records of Stamford, Conn.)” 246
