PARENTS & SIBLINGS OF

JACOB HALL

  UNKNOWN HALL   SARAH WOMACK
date unknown in TN   abt 1800 in TN
Married unknown

Very little is known of this Jacob Halls father nor much of his mother, Sarah Womack Hall. His wife, Sarah Womack Hall is buried in Blue Mountain (aka Briar Creek) Cemetery in Logan County, Arkansas. . There are many graves marked with only a fieldstone in the cemetery, one of which could be designating his grave. Jacob E Hall first appears in Scott Co, AR in 1850 with a wife Hannah and children. He is noted as being born in 1825 in Arkansas. In 1860 he was not enumerated but consistently tells us in 1870, 1880 and 1900 that he was born in Arkansas. Living next to him in 1850 is his brother Hiram born in 1824 and also listed as Arkansas. Just a couple households down is another man named John Hall. John is listed as being born in 1812 and in Arkansas. Family history does not mention a John Hall but it is very likely that this man was in fact a brother to our Jacob Hall. In 1880 Jacob lists both parents birth states as Tennessee. This conflicts with some family data suggesting that the father was born in South Carolina. Family history also states that Benjamin & Hiram (2 of Jacobs brothers) went to California during the Gold Rush and Jacob only heard from them once. While neither man can be found in California census, a John Hall, single and born 1818 in Arkansas with both parents from TN can be found in Calaveras County, CA in 1880. Is this the same John that was living beside Jacob in 1850? Could be.

All of the data points to our Halls being VERY early settlers of Arkansas. However, no Halls are enumerated anywhere in Arkansas in 1830 or 1840 (the first census' of Arkansas) that match all the ages of everyone involved. A search for all Wommacks, Womacks, Wammacks, Wamacks, Waumacks, etc has also yielded very little in terms of clues. The Jack Waumack living beside the Halls in 1850 is presumed to be Sarah's brother.

There were at least 2 Joseph Halls who settled in the Scott/Yell County area early on. One Joseph Hall states he was born 1795 VA in the 1850 census. He had a number of children born in Indiana before moving to Arkanas and settled in Yell County around 1834. This is most likely the Joseph Hall enumerated in Scott County in 1840. The other Joseph Hall was born 1804 NC but lived in TN before moving to Yell County after 1846. According to this Joseph Hall's descendants, one of his sons was a John Oxley Hall. What is interesting is that this John Oxley Hall seems to follow our Jacob or his sons around. In 1870 John Oxley Hall is living just a few HH away from Jacob E Hall and family in Revilee Twp of Scott County. In 1880 John Oxley is living in Petit Jean dist of Yell County along with 4 of Jacob's boys (Benjamin, Christopher Columbus, Lafayette and William Penn). So were they related or just Hall friends?

     Ben Hall

Hiram Hall  Born abt 1824 in Arkansas. Hiram and his brother Ben went to California during the great Gold Rush and were never heard from again.

Jacob Hall  Born abt 1825 in Arkansas. Died in 1902 in Oklahoma.   He is purported to be buried around Fort Gibson, in the Greenleaf cemetery, Cherokee County, Oklahoma.
Jacob's first wife was Hannah according to census data, aka Eliza Jones by family records, with whom he had Charlotte Temple "Lottie", Christopher Columbus "Lum", Benjamin Franklin "Frank", Lafayette "Lafe" and a twin to Lafayette. After Hannah's death, Jacob married Nancy Elizabeth Edwards.
According to some Hall family, Nancy Elizabeth's maiden name was Edwards and had been born in Springfield Missouri. They say she had been married twice before Jacob. Once to a Tom Newman who was thrown from a horse into a tree and was killed. Her second husband was a third cousin of hers, whose last name was Edwards. He died of pneumonia the night their child Eliza Edwards was born.
However, no records can be found substantiating these stories. In fact, Nancy always states in every census that she was born in AR and her parents TN. There is a Nancy Edwards living in the HH of a John Edwards in Benton County, AR in the 1860 census whose age matches our Nancy and who had been born in Arkansas. Her parents however were from NC.

I find it also interesting the choice of names for his first children. Benjanmin Franklin Hall, Christopher Columbus Hall, William Penn Hall are all names we know. But here are a couple we are probably less familiar with today. Marcus D Lafayette Hall was most likely named after Marquis De Lafayette, a man known for his influence in both the American and French Revolution. And Charlotte Temple Hall. In the late 1700's early 1800's one of the most widely read and purchased books was a novel about a young girl who had come to America. The name of the book and the name of the girl was Charlotte Temple.

Jacob was Church of Christ which at that time were known as Campbellites. When his son, William Penn Hall surrendered to preach as a Missionary Baptist preacher, Jacob was quite upset. In fact, it is said he never went inside the Baptist church to hear his son preach. However, one Sunday, he was caught standing outside the church by the window listening!

     Abraham Hall.

Bernice Hall .   Buried beside her mother, Sarah Womack Hall in Blue Mountain (aka Briar Creek) Cemetery in Logan County, Arkansas. .

John Hall  Born abt 1812 in Arkansas. John Hall is assumed to be a brother since he next door to Jacob Hall in Scott County, AR in 1850. A John Hall found in Calaveras County, CA in 1880. This John lists his birth as 1818 Arkansas with both parents from TN. It is possible that John went to California along with Hiram & Ben.
