Edmond B Fulgham Born Dec 1829 in Lincoln County, Tennessee Died 16 Apr 1917 in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Buried in Old Union Cemetery, Sebastian County, Arkansas. One resource that will serve as a base for our discussion is the Fulgham Family of Oktibbeha County, by Edris Jean Fulgham Gammill. I will refer to it as, The Gammill Books, and will use its numbering system to identify some of the key players. In 1850, there were two Edmond Fulghams living in Bibb County, Alabama. Both Edmond's married a Sarah, or Sally, and both had a brother named John. Each Edmond had a father named John and a mother named Sarah! In The Gammill Books, it says "The similarity in the names of Sally and John #262 and Sarah and John R. Fulgham #724 has led to errors in the history of the two families." Indeed it has! This family was living next door to John & Martha Smitherman, who were John Robert's in-laws. Four years later, on January 19th, 1854, Edmond married Sarah F. Steele in Bibb County, Alabama. In The Steele Family, it lists a Rev. John Steele, wife Nancy, with a daughter Sarah F. Steele, born 1834, AL. . The Gammill Books state that, "Edmond B. Fulgham married Sarah F. Steele on January 19, 1854, and they had three known children. The children were Martha born in 1855, John born in 1858, and James R. born in 1860. Evidently he died prior to Sept 15 1863, but I do not know the circumstances." However, this statement found in the Gammill Books, refers to Edmond, son of John Fulgham #262. This is in error. The Edmond that married Sarah F. Steele was the son of John Robert Fulgham #724. This must be Edmond Fulgham, son of John Robert #724, with his wife is Sarah F. Steele. Edmond B. and his younger brother, John R., both served in the C.S.A. as privates in Company H, 44th Infantry Regiment of Alabama. Apparently, Edmond died during the war leaving his wife and 3 children. Our second Edmond was the son of John Fulgham #262. John #262 was born in Virginia, moved to North Carolina as a baby, then to South Carolina with his dad at age the age of 2. He married in South Carolina sometime before 1812 and began his family. There is a 6 year gap between the birth of his second son, John Raiford and his third son, John Thomas, leading some to believe he married twice. All we know for sure is his wife in 1850, Sarah, was born in South Carolina about 1895. "Sometime after June 14, 1814 John #262 and his young family moved from South Carolina to Tennessee. They probably first moved near his brothers in Montgomery County, Georgia, before moving on to Tennessee prior to 1820. John Thomas the third son, was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1820; then Matthew was born July 17, 1824; Edmond B. was born in 1829; ..., all born in Lincoln County, Tennessee." Sometime in 1836, John #262 moved his large family south, to the town of Eoline, Alabama near the Haysop Baptist Church. The 1850 census of Bibb County, Alabama, West Side of Cahaba River Township shows HH #262:
John Fulgham, age 80, b. VA Polly, age 18, b.TN Elias, age 13, b. AL
Sally, age 55, b. SC Anthony, age 17, b. TN Jesse, age 10, b. AL
Massey(Mathew Wash'n), age 26, b. TN Martha, age 16, b.TN
Edmond, age 21, b. TN James, age 15, b. TN Edmond's older brothers, Michael and John Raiford Fulgham were living next door in HH #263. "John #262 died in the fall of 1851, in Bibb County, Alabama, and was no doubt buried in the cemetery of Haysop Baptist Church where he and his family attended; however, he has no tombstone.....Sarah Fulgham died sometime after 1860 in Bibb County" After their father's death, Michael, John Raiford, Edmond, James Willis, Mathew Wash'n and Jesse moved to Double Springs, Mississippi. Elias probably went as well, but there are no records showing him there. James Willis and Mathew Wash'n lived in Double Springs until their death and are buried in the Clear Springs Methodist Church cemetery. John Raiford purchased the E ½ of the NE ¼ of Section 28 in 1851 with the deed witnessed by Edmond. The Gammill Books state, "As a single young man at age 22, Edmond came to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, with his older brother, John Raiford Fulgham, and several of their neighbors looking for a new place to settle. Edmond signed the deed on December 17, 1851, as a witness when John Raiford bought 80 acres from Thomas Williams. They returned to Bibb County, Alabama, and many of them moved their families to Oktibbeha or Choctaw County, Mississippi, but Edmond did not move to Mississippi." We now have sufficient evidence, however, that Edmond did move to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. There he married Sarah Ann Terry sometime around 1853. Unfortunately, the Oktibbeha County courthouse burned in 1880 which destroyed all the marriage records prior to that time. The Terry family is shown in the 1850 Oktibbeha County, MS census in HH #275 :
Thomas Terry, age 40, b. TN
Julia, age 12, b. MS Nancy, age 6, b. AL
Melinda (Priddy Terry), age 41, b.TN
Gideon, age 11, b. AL
Malinda, age 3, b. MS
Francis, age 21, b. AL
Thomas, age 10, b. MS
Judy Priddy, age 85, VA
Sarah, age 14, b. MS
Eliza, age 8, b. AL (Mary E) The first courthouse document of Edmond and Sarah Ann as husband and wife, is a deed, recorded on Sept 8th, 1858. This deed shows Edmond Fulgham and Sarah Ann Fulgham, his wife, selling 160 acres in Section 28, T 19, R 12 East, Oktibbeha County, MS. Her name is recorded in the deed 3 times as, "Sarah Ann Fulgham, his wife" which obivously would not be Sarah F. Steele. The land is located 1.5 miles SE of Double Springs Baptist Church, and less than a mile from land owned by, Francis M. Terry. Interestingly, the north ½ of this land, is the 80 acres that John Raiford bought, and Edmond signed as a witness, in 1851. Apparently John Raiford later sold the land to Edmond but it was never recorded in the courthouse. Edmond and Sarah Ann's first three children, Sarah, Mary Ann, and John Thomas, were born in Mississippi. (not Alabama as Edmond & Sarah F. Fulgham's first 3 children) The Double Springs Baptist Membership Record, as photocopied in the book Our Butler Family, lists their members. Beside each name, the word "dismissed" and the date if that member was removed from the church rolls. Members who were dismissed between 1857 and 1859 that moved to Sebastian County, Arkansas were::
John R. Fulgham Mary (McGill) Fulgham Edmond Fulgham Sarah (Terry) Fulgham
Judith (Terry) Ledbetter Thomas P. Terry Malinda (Priddy) Terry Mary E Terry
Thomas M Butler Nancy Butler Mary Butler
Dickerson Locke Rebecca Locke Frances M Terry Sarah (Locke) Terry
Explanatory note: Judith (Terry) Ledbetter was the daughter of Thomas Terry and the wife of John M. Ledbetter. John M. Ledbetter was not shown on the rolls of the church. Mary E Terry, daughter of Thomas Terry, would later marry Elias M Fulgham. Sarah Terry Fulgham, was the daughter of Thomas Terry and wife of Edmond Fulgham. Sarah Locke Terry, daughter of Dickerson Locke and wife of Francis M. Terry. Mary Butler was a daughter of Thomas M. Butler. In 1860 the following families purchased Federal Land Grants in Twp 5 N, Rg 32 W of Sebastian County, Arkansas.
John M. Ledbetter, 120 acres in Section 21 and 80 acres in Section 8
Frances M. Terry, 160 acres in Section 10
Gideon Terry, 80 acres in Section 9
Thomas M. Butler, 80 acres in Section 10 While Ed and Sarah Ann did not purchase their land under a Federal Land Grant, they did purchase land in Section 3 of the same Township and Range. (Note that in a township of land, section 3 is directly above section 10) By 1861, John Raiford Fulgham left his brother Edmond in Arkansas and moved back to Double Springs Mississippi. On January 9th, 1861 he purchased 290 acres in Oktibbeha County just a mile from the first land he owned there and on May 11th 1861, he joined the Double Springs Masonic Lodge. He is buried in the Chestnut Log Baptist Church Cemetery. It wasn't long after Edmond arrived in NW Arkansas, that the war broke out. According to stories told by Everett Pogue, Edmond was a civilian "teamster" during the war, delivering supplies under cover by wagon to the troops as was his friend Thomas Butler. Thomas was killed sometime around 1864 while delivering supplies. Then, as shown below, the Fulghams, Butlers and the Ledbetters moved to Kansas and lived there between 1864 and 1866. By 1870, Edmond and Sarah Ann Fulgham, the Ledbetters along with Thomas Butler's son, the James Butler family, had moved back to Sebastian County, Arkansas. Years later, in 1907, Ed and Sarah sold their land in Sebastian County. The names of E. and Sarah A. Fulgham were recorded in the deed 4 times. Minnie Pogue, Ed & Sarah's youngest daughter, signed the deed as well as a witness to the execution of the deed. Terry Family Researchers tell us that two Fulgham brothers married two Terry sisters. Edmond married Sarah Ann and Elias M. Fulgham married Mary Elizabeth Terry (Sarah Ann's sister). In 1870, E.M. & Mary Fulgham were living in Tarrant County, Texas just a few doors down from Gideon Terry and his wife Virginia. Apparently by 1880, Elias had died and Mary Elizabeth had taken her children to live with Grandpa Thomas Terry. The 1880 census of Mississippi Township of Sebastian County shows Thomas Terry and 3 of his daughters with their families: Mary E. (Terry) Fulgham, Judah A. (Terry) Ledbetter and Sallie (Terry) Fulgham. It also shows all of Edmond and Sarah Fulghams children. Once again, we also see the Butlers, the Terrys, the Ledbetters and the Fulghams living in close proximity to one another. Ed Fulgham is buried at Old Union Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas, alongside his wife, Sallie. The double tombstone shows his birthdate of Dec 13, 1829, death Apr 16, 1917 and her birthdate as Feb 14, 1836, died Oct 20, 1923. The birthdate on Edmonds tombstone matches Edmond, son of John Fulgham #262. The birthdate on Sarah's tombstone matches that of Sarah Ann Terry. Buried beside Ed and Sallie Fulgham, is Thomas Terry (spelled Terrey on the tombstone), who was born 12 Dec 1808, and died Sept 5, 1890. This matches Thomas P. Terry, Sarah Terry's father. Thomas Terry is actually buried between Ed and two of his grandchildren. The graves are in this order: Sallie Fulgham, Ed Fulgham, Thomas Terrey, Ludy Adams, and Oscar Blackard. Also buried at Old Union Cemetery is Ed and Sallie's longtime friend from Double Springs, Mississippi, John M. Ledbetter. Edmond Fulgham met his good friends, John Ledbetter and Thomas Butler in the few years he lived in Double Springs, Mississippi. It was there that he also met the Terry family and married Sarah Ann . These four families, the Terrys, Ledbetters, Butlers and the Fulghams all left their homes in Double Springs, Mississippi to settle new land in Northwest Arkansas. Their families were connected by a lifelong friendship, the marriages of their children, and the ravages of war. As a footnote. There is an Elias M. Fulgham recorded as having fought with the 2nd Creek Volunteers during the Civil War. This company consisted of Creek Indians and/or half Creeks and fought in East Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. Minnie (Fulgham) Pogue, Edmonds daughter, always claimed that her father was half Indian. Could it be that John Fulgham's spouse was a Creek Indian? Edmund B. Fulgham was apparently born in Lincoln County, TN but raised in Bibb County, Alabama. His father was 59 when Edmund was born. His mother is either unknown or named Sallie but the last name is unknown. In either case it is possible that this is the Indian ancestor told by Minnie Fulgham (Edmonds youngest daughter). It has also been found that an Elias M Fulgham, Edmonds younger brother, fought in Arkanas during the Civil War with the 1st Creek Mounted Volunteers, CSA in the Northwest Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma skirmishes. This troop was made up of Creek Indians. Maybe the "other tribe" Minnie referred to when saying that Edmond was of "a different tribe" than the Cherokee.
Many years ago my late grandfather, Everett Pogue, wrote in his family Bible that Edmond B. Fulgham married Sarah Terry from Double Springs, Mississippi. These were his grandparents. As a teen, Everett had lived with his grandmother Sallie(Sarah), during the last years of her life in Leflore County, Oklahoma. When I began researching my family history however, I found that some researchers had a Sarah Steele recorded as Edmond's wife. Thus, a search began to discover just who Edmond and Sarah Fulgham were.
