There is much discussion and disagreement as to whether Phillip's middle name was Delancey or Duvall. An additional disagreement over whether this Captain Phillip D Meroney came to America from Ireland or whether it was his father. But one thing is for certain, Phillip D Meroney, born in 1745 was First Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp from July to December 1775 during the American Revolution. He raised and equipped a regiment at his own expense and entered the Continental Army, as Captain of the First Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp. He fought under General deKalb and General Nathan Greene and went with the latter to South Carolina. He fought in the battles of White Plains, Brandywine and Yorktown. His second wife, Martha Massey, filed for a widows military pension. Her tombstone, located in WATKINS INGRAM CEMETERY, MARSHALL COUNTY, MS says, 'Martha, Consort of P. Meroney of Revolutionary Memory.' He was described as tall and red-headed. Phllip Meroney died in Greenville District, South Carolina. The location of his grave is unknown.

RACHEL ARCHIBALD SEMMES MERONEY.   Born 29 Sep 1794 in Smith County, Tennessee.  Died 27 Aug 1858 in Byhalia, Marshall County, Mississippi.  Buried in Watkins Ingram Cemetery, Marshall County, Mississippi
About 1812-1813 Rachel's half brother Phillip D Maroney, Jr, went back to Travelers Rest, SC, to the home of his parents, Phillip Sr and Martha Semmes Massey, and while there he bought some horses to take back to Tennessee. Rachel, (his half sister) decided to go to Tennessee with him and rode one of the horses from Travelers Rest to Smith County, Tennessee. While in Tennessee, Rachel met a young man from Virginia by the name of Tandy Key Young, whom she married in 1813, at age twenty. She was married on a Thursday Night by Caldbreath, Esqr. They later moved to Madison County, Tennessee.       Rachel S. Meroney actually has two tombstones in Watkins Ingram cemetery. Her name is on an arched shaped tombstone along with her mother's name, Martha and a separate stone which simply says, Rachel Young, consort of T.K. Young.
