LETTER TO GENERAL JOHN BANKHEAD MAGRUDER OF THE TRANS-MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT
Camp Groce near Hempstead Texas
October 2nd 1963
Maj. Genl J. B. Magruder -- Sir
In obedience to your order
as required by heroic & special Notice
within our District
all men on this side of the Mill Run ^
belonging to the 24 Regt Texas Cavalry
To report to me. Among others who
have reported are James Lindley &
J. R. McIntire, The former reported to
me at Montgomery & was furloughed
to report to me at Hempstead on the
25th ult. which he failed to do
The latter did not report. I sent
from this camp on the 20th ult a de-
tachment of men to arrest and bring
them to this camp & Said Lindley &
McIntire on being called upon by
said detail came into camp & reported
for duty on the fourth. on the first
inst. they left my camp without
permission and went to the Militia
camp and applied to Capt. J. Evans Barnes Bttn
commanding co. in Maj. Barnes Battalion
To be received into his company--
and were by Capt. Evans Introduced
to Maj. Barnes as men who were in
a bad fix and wished to be relieved
by joining that command of state troops.
They told Maj Barnes that they
belonged to said 24th Regt. and had
understood that I had orders to require
them to report to me--Maj Barnes in-
formed them that they could not join
the State troops without your special order
& declined to give them Transportation
but gave them a note of introduction
to Col Sayles then on the cars for
Houston--said Lindley having been cap-
tured at the Post [Arkansas Post] took the oath of al-
legiance to the Fed. Govt --He refused
when ordered by me some time since
while I was acting under orders of Lt. Gen.
Smith to report at Shreveport--
McIntire states that he made his
escape from the Federals while in prison
I am of opion [sic.] He also took the oath.
I am informed they started to
Houston yesterday for the purpose
of procuring some special order
and am apprehensive they may
misrepresent their case incorrectly
so far as relates to the position they
now occupy--that is as to their being
Deserters from my camp--
I send a notice for advertising
them as deserters in case they
should not be found & brought
back--which Gen will please
approve & have published
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
