The Matthews line I have starts with James Matthews, Sr., who was born sometime before 1670 in Virginia. He died after 1754 in the Edgecombe District of North Carolina. James Sr., married a lady named Ann and they had four sons that I know of. Of those sons, Charles is my ancestor.
Charles Matthews was born 1704 in Virginia and died 1780 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He married a lady named Elizabeth and had at least one son, whose name was William.
William was born 1740 in Virginia and died 1804 in Lunenburg Co., Virginia. He married Susannah Reade on December 31, 1763 in Brunswick Co, Alabama. William and Susannah had 12 children.
John Matthews was born in 1770 in Brunswick County, Virginia and died in 1830 in Jackson County, Alabama. He married on December 25, 1794 in Lawrenceville, Brunswick County, Virginia to Frances Miskell, who was born in 1770 and died in 1870. John and Frances had eight children.
Leroy Matthews was born about 1820 and died before 1856 in Jackson County, Alabama. He married to Sarah Allen in 1847. She was born in 1828 in Alabama and died February of 1870 in Jackson County, Alabama. Leroy and Sarah had at least three sons.
John H. Matthews was born on February 1, 1848 in Jackson County, Alabama and died in 1912. He married Catherine Ann McQuary in Jackson County. She was born in Jackson County Alabama in 1841and died there in 1896. I only know of one child by John and Catherine, and that is Sam Leroy Matthews.
Sam Leroy Matthews was born on February 19, 1879 and died on September 27, 1970 in Hunt County, Texas. He married Mae Ella Hamilton, who was born April 10, 1883 in Alabama and died on May 29, 1965 in Hunt Co., Texas. Sam and Mae had seven children.
Trudie Matthews was born July 24, 1903 in Hunt County, Texas and died September 14, 1994 at Hale Center, in Hale County, Texas. On April 1, 1922 at Commerce, in Hunt County, Texas she married to James Floyd Kirkland. He was born February 4, 1901 in Cass County, Texas and died on April 20, 1981 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas. Floyd and Trudie had 6 children, most of whom are still living.
