New Cowper (pronounced Cooper) was originally a cluster of six farms. In 1628 John Barwis (of the Langigg Hall line) bought a farm. The Barwis home stood on it's own, some distance from the group, and has now been demolished.

Langrigg is a small village of several houses just north of the Carlisle to Maryport road. Langrigg Hall is described as a "neat manor house" a little to the north of the village.
