Barwis of Islekirk and Dryholme
This is derived from the accounts by Frank Swift and Carl Pearson.
1.Stephen De Berwys living 1399-1428
An I.P.M. of 1399 shows that Stephen held the Riddings and Hames in the manors of Cockermouth and Papcastle
respectively.
They were held of the Percys, and one of the MS. books at Cockermouth Castle contains this helpful
information:
Ricus Barwis next of kin and heir of Anthony Barwis holds a parcel of land called the Riddings xli
formerly John Haymes and lately Rici Barwis. Written against this in the left hand margin is
A0 8 E 3 ['335] John Haymes held the Riddens.
A0 22 R 2 ['399] Stephus de Barwys held the Ryddens in Setmurthy.
While in the right hand margin is
A0 '3 H 7 [1498] Rici Barwys held Riddens.
These entries show that the Riddings was held successively by
Stephen de Berwys in 1399.
Richard Barwis in 1495. "lately Richard Barwis".
Anthony Barwis (of Ilekirk who died about 1578).
Richard Barwis (of Ilekirk who died in 1599).
This helps to establish the generations between Stephen de Berwys and Anthony Barwis,
who died about 1578, and seems to suggest a descent from father to son.
The Richard of 1498 was probably the grandson of Stephen rather than his son,
for there is too long a gap between the dates for the latter relationship.
2.Richard Barwis abt 1410
Wife Margaret Cowper.
1441 - lease of grange at Caldbeck mentions wife Margaret and son Richard
1456 - Richard Barwys was clerk of the forest of Westward
4.Richard Barwis abt 1467-1544
Married Anne Pennington, daughter of Sir John Pennington of Muncaster
1497 - Richard Barwys the younger late of Hyldekyck to John Pennington

5.Anthony Barwis abt 1508-1578

Anthony inherited considerable estates and among them the Riddings and Haymes held by
Stephen de Berwys in 1399.
He also possessed the manors of Blencogo and Stainburn, a third part of the manor of Bothel,
half the manor of Brigham, half the manor of Ireby and half that of Dearham.
6.Thomas Barwis abt 1540-1575
of Haltcliffe (near Caldbeck). Married Mabel Dalston 17/9/1571 at Dalston church.
To ensure the succession of the family estates in case Thomas died without heirs male
an indenture tripartite was made on 13th Dec 1572 between:
Thomas Barwys, of Hawtclyffe, son and heir apparent of Anthony Barwys, of Hieldkyrke,
Co. Cumberland Esq. of the first part;
Richard Barwys, son of John Barwis, of Hieldkyrke, Co. Cumberland, gentleman, of the second part;
and William Pennynton, William Skelton, John Brisko, Esquires, Robert Dalston and Mungo Smith,
gentlemen, of the third part,
agreeing to a recovery in Hilary term next, of certain manors and lands to the uses set out viz.:
Anthony Barwys for twenty one years following, if he live so long; after that term,
or his death, to the uses successively of:

Richard aforesaid, party thereto,
John, brother of Richard,
James, brother of Richard,
Hugh Barwys, of Dryehollme, Co. Cumberland,
In default, to the right heirs of the said Anthony Barwys.
4.John Barwis living 1535-1544
Probably brother of Richard (Swift) (could be son)
1538 - appears among tenants of Islekirk farms, with Richard
1544 - John Barwis gentleman is among the tenants when capital messuage of Islekirk
granted to Anthony
5.John Barwis living 1572
Probably son of John (Swift) (could be same person)
1572 tripartite agreement - of Hieldkyrke ... gentleman
6.Richard Barwis died 1599
Inherited Islekirk after Anthony died.
Married Mabel Dalston 11/1/1580 at Dalston church (widow of Thomas).
Richard died in 1599 and an I.P.M. was held at Carlisle on 13th April of that year.
This shows his possessions to have been considerable.
They included the manors of Thornthwaite in Le Fell and Blencogo half the manor of Dearham,
a third of the manor of Bothel and half that of High Ireby with mill and lands,
the village of Ruthwayte and the capital messuage and grange of Ilekirk with land and a water-mill,
messuages, burgages and lands in Portinscale, Keswick Hameshill, Southwaite,
Carlisle and other places.
The I.P.M. states that Richard had set aside the hall manor of Dearham, the manor of Blencogo,
the capital messuage of Ilekirk and certain lands as jointure for his wife, Mabel, for life;
on her death they were to go to his son and heir, Anthony, and his heirs male.
In default they were to go to the following and their heirs male in order,
Richard's brother John Barwis, Hugh Barwis and the right heirs of Anthony Barwis.
The I.P.M. concludes with the information that Anthony Barwis is Richard's son and heir;
that at the time of his father's death Anthony was 19 years and 9 months old;
that Mabel Barwis is the wife of the said Richard Barwis, deceased,
and that Grace, the wife of Anthony Barwis, is alive and living at Cockermouth.
7.Anthony Barwis 1579-1616
Married Grace Fleming abt 1599
An I.P.M., held at Carlisle on 13 Jan. 1617,
shows that Anthony died possessed of the manors of Thornthwaite in Le Fell,
and Blencogo, the half manors of Dearham and High Ireby, the village of Ruthwaite,
the capital messuage of Ilekirk Grange, lands in Hameshill, Keswick, etc.,
and that an annuity of 13. 6s. 8d., granted by his father,
was payable to John Barwis (Anthony's uncle).
It also states that by Indenture made in 1610 all lands and manors were entailed
on Anthony's son Richard and his heirs male,
in default on Anthony's brothers John, Richard and Francis in turn.
The I.P.M. says that Anthony died on 5 July 1616, and that his son and heir, Richard,
was 14 years old.
8.Richard Barwis Abt 1601-1649

In 1648 a small force of Royalists scaled the walls of Carlisle,
