He was of Hartford, Connecticut, and in the following year was one of the founders and original proprietors of Haddam, Connecticut. He was one of the twenty-eight settlers there in 1662. He was captain of the first military company of Haddam and served until October, 1697. He died in 1724, aged about ninety years. About 1685 the Gates family removed to East Haddam as well as many of the Cones, Bates and Brainerds. She Patience Oates in family records, but Nathaniel Foote married a Patience Gates (b. 1712) and had a daughter Patience (Foote). She Foote Genealogy gives Patience, d. of Samuel Gates of Colchester, but GDNES shows no child Patience of Samule Gates, but child Patience of Samuel's borther Joseph Gates. Birth date for Joseph's Patience also matches age at death for Patience in Foote Geneaology. Seems clear that Samuel in the Foote genealogy is erroneous and it should be Joseph.
