242. William1 Sumner;61 born 1606 at Bicester, Oxford, England;61 married Mary West 22 Oct 1625 at Eng;173 died Mar 1692.61

He "WILLIAM SUMNER, son of William, was born in England, about the year 1605, being by his deposition, given 23d December, 1685, "eighty years old or thereabouts." It is said that he came from Burcester, in Oxfordshire, although the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Bird Sumner, and his brother Charles Richard,(*) the Bishop of Winchester, belonged to Warwickshire, and numerous others of the Sumner family, to Kent. The name was originally Somner or Sommoner, from his office of summoning parties into the ecclesiastical and other courts.

WILLIAM SUMNER, the ancestor, and his wife Mary, settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was made a freeman in 1637; admitted to the Church, in 1652; was for twelve years a Deputy to the General Court; a Selectman twenty-three years, nearly half the time from 1637 to 1688; was a Rater for five years, and a Commissioner "to try and Issue Small Causes" for nine years, from 1663 to 1671 inclusive. In 1645, he "was appointed one of a Committee for building a new Meeting house," and in 1663 was chosen "Clerk of ye Training band." In Sept. 1675, Mr. Sumner, with Richard Baker, of Dorchester, and others, was on a jury for a trial of ye Indians at Boston. His wife Mary died 7th June, 1676. Mr. Sumner's will was proved, 24th March, 1691-2. "174 He "SUMNER FAMILY. From the best obtainable evidence it is believed that Roger Sumner, of Bicester, Oxford county, England, died December, 1608, and buried in St. Edbury churchyard, was the progenitor of the Sumner family in America, at least the New England and especially the Worcester county branches. He married Joan Franklin, November 2, 1601, and by this union one son was born, William (1), who became the American ancestor. William was baptized at Bicester church, Oxford county, England, January 2, 1602, and in 1625 married Mary West, and by her had two sons, born in England: Roger, baptized August, 1632, and George, baptized March, 1633. The family then emigrated to New England, settling at Dorchester, Massachusetts, about 1635, and from this family, it is believed, have sprung all the New England Sumners, including Governor Increase, Gen. W. H. Sumner, and our great statesman, Hon. Charles Sumner, of congressional fame. "175 He " WILLIAM SUMNER, only son and heir of Roger, was baptized at Bicester, 27th January, 1604-5; married Mary West, 22d October, 1625; came to Dorchester, Massachusetts, about 1635. He was made a freeman in 1637, after which his name appears on almost every page of the Town Records during the period of his active life. In 1645, he was appointed one of a committee for building a new meeting-house. He was admitted to the church in 1652; was for twelve years a Deputy to the General Court, and a Selectman twenty-three years. He was also a Rater for five years, and one of the three Commissioners (or Magistrates) "to try and issue small causes" for nine years, when the office ceased. His wife died in Dorchester, 7th June, 1676. He died there 9th December. 1688, aged about eighty-three years. He had seven children--William,(*) Roger, George, Samuel, Increase, Joan, and Abigail. In 1663 he was an officer of school lands, Clerk of "ye training band" (soldiers) and Commissioner to try and issue small causes, and from 1658 for many years Deputy to the General Court from Dorchester.
