He "OLMSTEAD, JAMES, Cambridge, came to Boston 16 Sept. 1632, in the

Lion, from London, with two ch. and others, was rec. as freem. 6 Nov.

foll. constable some yrs. at C. but with earliest sett. to Hartford

1636, of wh. he was an orig. propr. with large lots of ld. and d. 1640.

His will, of 28 Sept. of that yr. with inv. show. comfortab. prop. is found

in Trumbull's Coll. Rec. I. 446-9. It names only two ch. Nicholas, and

Nehemiah; but niece Rebecca O. wh. he brot. over, has also a small

provis. and his kinsmen Richard, and John O. perhaps brs. of Rebecca,

by the overseers of his will, with concur. of the s. rec. too, a small portion of the est.

Yet prob. it was their own prop. held by him in tr. and

they may have come with her. It also provides for his serv. William

Corbee or Corby.

61 He "Son of James OLMSTED and Jane BRISTOW. His name appears on Hartford's Founders Monument. From The Family History of Judge Ellsworth D. Belden..., by Stanley R. and Elvera Belden, 1980: "When James left his home at Fairsted, he left in its burying place his wife and four of their seven children. James Olmsted, together with two sons, Nicholas and Nehemiah, two nephews, Richard and John, and a niece, Rebecca, came to New England in the ship 'Lyon,' under Capt. PIERCE, arrive at Boaston on the Lord's Day 16 September 1632, after a voyage of twelve weeks from Braintree, England. There were 123 passengers, of whom 50 were children. They soon settled at Mount Wollaston, now Quincy, near Boston, but in the course of a year, they removed to New Town, now known as Cambridge, Massachusetts. James was made a freeman 6 November 1632 and was chosen by a popular vote 3 November 1634 to be the Constable." He removed to Hartford, CT in the summer of 1634. In 1986, a memorial conisting of a maple tree and granite marker was placed in the Center Church Cemetery (Ancient Burying Ground), Hartford, CT in honor of James OLMSTED and his brother Richard OLMSTED. Married Oct. 26, 1605, Great Leighs, Essex, England."

Nicholas, d. Aug. 1684, son of James

and Joyce (Cornish) Olmsted of Hartford,

who came in the "Lion," arriving

at Boston, Sept. 16th, 1633. He was

Capt. in the Pequod war, 1675. The

Olmsted's old family seat in Fairsted,

Co. Essex, Eng., still exists. James

Olmsted, "first settler," Hartford,

Conn., was bapt. at Great Leighs (or

Lees Magna), Co. Essex, Eng., Dec.

4, 1580 (parish register.) The name

of his wife was Joyce Cornish, m. at

Great Leighs, Oct. 26, 1605, bur. Eng.

Apr. 21, 1621. James was the son of

James, b. 1550, d. Dec. 2, 1595, who

m. Aug. 12, 1676, Jane Bristow, he being

son of Thomas, b. 1521, who was son

of James, b. 1496, the son of John, b.

1470, and Alice Hankley, b. 1473. d.

He "NICHOLAS, Hartford, b. of the preced. b. in Eng. serv. 1637 in the Pequot war, aft. showing his wild oats, bec. a good citizen, freem. 1669, ens. and rep. 1672 and 3, capt. in 1675, and d. 31 Aug. 1684. He had early m. bef. is f.'s will of 28 Sept. 1640, a d. of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, had Sarah; Mary or Mabel, b. 20 Nov. 1646; Rebecca, Mar. 1648; John,

3 Feb. 1650; and left s. Joseph, Samuel, and Thomas, beside ds. Sarah Gates, prob. w. of George, m. early in 1662; Mabel Butler; and Rebecca Bigelow."

Surveyor of highways; 1646; townsman for North side between 1653 and 1683; Corporal 1658; freeman 1669; deputy to General Court 1672 and 1673. Served in King Philip's War and made Capt. Aug. 26, 1675. Married first Sep. 28, 1640, Hartford, CT Sarah LOOMIS (b. 1617, Essex, England; d. 1667, Hartford, CT), daughter of Joseph LOOMIS and Mary WHITE. Sarah was the mother of all children of Nicholas, except his youngest. Nicholas married second about 1667/8."

145 He left a will on 20 Aug 1683; "will dated Aug. 20, 1683 and proved Nov. 25, 1684."145
