there October 13, 1613; d 1691; came to America 1633; settled

first in Roxbury, Mass.; member of the church therein 1634.

Contributed a subscription of 3 shillings annually for the

schools of the town. He d in Dorchester 1689. Married 1st

August 20, 1640 Ann Parks who was bur September 10, 1641;

2nd January 1, 1642 Mary Elliot, dau of Philip and sister of

John the Apostle to the Indians. He gave a Bible to each

grandchild.

Apr. 1673, Samuel Capen; and Mary m. 16 May 1682, Preserved Ca-

pen, and she d. 20 Oct. 1708."61 He " EDWARD PAYSON1, born October 3, 1613, at Nazeing, county Essex, England, came to America in 1633, settled at Roxbury, Mass., and was admitted to First Church in 1634. Giles Payson who came to Roxbury in the Hopewell was perhaps a brother of Edward.

Edward Payson was sworn a freeman May 13, 1640, and on August 20, 1640, married Ann Parke, daughter of William Parke of Roxbury, who died September 10 of the following year, eight days after the birth of a daughter Mary who died young. He married (2) January 1, 1642, Mary Eliot, sister of the noted Rev. John Eliot, "Apostle to the Indians:, and ca 1658 they moved to Dorchester. Mr. Payson died ca 1690; his widow March 24, 1697. By 1834, twenty-two of this name had graduated at Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth, and seven of the thirteen from Harvard were clergymen. "273
