Miscellaneous Records of the Families of Bathe

Miscellaneous Records of the Families of Bathe / Bath

The following record summaries have been extracted from the databases of the A2A (Archive to Archive) and PRO . Though not complete the database contains a significant amount of what is contained in English archives, which in turn is a very small fraction of what were their original numbers during the medieval period. Where possible the summaries are listed by the county in which the occurrence took place and not where the record may be kept.

What might be derived from these records: These records are of land transactions from the 12th to the 15th C., during the period in which our ancestors were acquiring family surnames and passing them on to their offspring. Because a person is referred to as de Baa, de Bathon, de Bathonia etc. in a medieval record doesn't necessarily indicate that this was their family name. Medieval legal formulas identified a person with his place of residence even when he had a family name; case in point being the record giving Jeff Cole de Bathon. However, if a family unit is clearly not resident in Bath and is clearly passing that name on to its offspring, it can be concluded that this is a surname. The same would apply to the names of London, Bristol, York and any other major, established medieval town. The records as such do not prove, nor disprove, the origin of the Bath / Bathe family name as being from the town of Bath.

What we can find in these records are mentions of a number of the individuals listed on the Medieval Connections page on this site. The family of Walter Bathon of East Raddon, Devon is followed through their holding and leases of  lands and the manor of Shockerwick in Ford (Bathford) just across the river Avon from the town of Bath itself. As these individuals held extensive holdings in Devon and apparently Sussex, where Andrew de Medstede was at one time sheriff, it can not be assumed that they resided there for any length of time. Indeed no mention is made of any lands in Somerset in Walter de Bathon's Inquisition Post Mortem. However, the mention of Margaret's sons, Walter, Augustine and Thomas as "de Bathon", when they were probably by Sir Andrew de Metstede's sons, may indicate otherwise.

Also mentioned is Sir Henry de Bathonia, the justice, and members of his family. Sir Henry and his wife, Aline are recorded in multiple transactions acquiring the manor of Upper Lambourne in Berkshire. His granddaughter Joan de Bohn is found granting land in Lincolnshire to Hugh Bathe, who apparently grants land in Lambourne to the man who married his sister, Aline. Was Hugh Joan's Uncle or a cousin? The M. Peter de Baa who witnesses a Yorkshire deed may be the same apparent son / grandson of Sir Henry.

In addition, the reader will find three Sheriffs of Devon named Walter de Bathon who are claimed by other sources to be connected to the families given above. As to the rest we'll probably never know.

Sussex

TITLE DEEDS Medestede : Creator(s): Waleys family of Glynde Place, East Sussex Morley family of Glynde Place, East Sussex Trevor family of Glynde Place, East Sussex Brand family of Glynde Place, East Sussex  [from Administrative History]  The coparceners claimed that they were heirs general to two parts of the manor of Glynde by the fine of 1305. The other third was held in dower by Joan, widow of Sir Richard Waleys III. The parties were at issue as to whether Sir John Waleys I was the son of Godfrey Waleys by on the curious premise that as Sir John was bedridden for more than a year before he died he must have been more than 69 (if born in 1305) 'for he was a sclendre mane and also lusty a knyght in ys dayes as was any of ys age wythine the reyme of Ingelond.' More rational proofs for Sir John's age were his homages for the Kentish manors in 1315 and 1318 recorded in 'the gret booke of fees' of the archbishop. He must have been at least in his eighties when he died. This lusty knight was a member of the retinue of Michael, Lord Poynings, in the Crecy-Calais campaign of 1346-7. His venerable age and military reputation made him a man of standing in Sussex; he was sheriff of Sussex and Surrey in 1364 and sat as knight of the shire in the parliaments from 1368-71. Sir John married twice and had two sons Andrew and William by his first wife Nicholas, daughter of Sir Andrew Medestede of West Firle, and two sons Hugh and Richard by his second wife, Alice Aspale. Andrew died soon after his return from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1378 and his brother William inherited the Waleys estates. Richard, the surviving son of Sir John's second marriage, received his mother's Aspale properties in Devonshire and founded a new branch of the family in that county. Sir William Waleys I represented Sussex as knight of the shire in the parliaments of 1380, 1382/3, 1387/8 and 1390; he was twice sheriff of Surrey and Sussex in 1383 and 1395. His wife Margaret, daughter of Sir John St. Clere, Chief Forester of Ashdown Forest to John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, survived him and received her dower from her son John Waleys II in, 1409.
