History of Clinton County, Michigan, 1980, page 69 89. ALMOND B. CRESSMAN FAMILY On October 22, 1911 Almond B. Cressman was born on the Cressmann farm, located on the northeast corner of DeWitt and Price Roads in Section 5, Olive Township, Clinton County, Michigan. The farm was known as "Locust Corners". Almond was the only child of Edmund A. and Nellie Peterson. He attended grade school at the Merle Beach School and was graduated from St. Johns High School in 1930. On December 25, 1933 Almond was married to Dorothy Marie Beck, the daughter of Frank and Edna Crom Beck. The young couple took up residency on Almond's forty acre farm in Bingham Township, where they resided for eleven years. The Cressmans have three children: [deleted for privacy]. In 1944 Almond and Dorothy sold their farm in Bingham Township and purchased a one hundred acre farm in Olive Township. While they were in the process of remodeling the house, Almond's mother, Nellie Cressman, died; and the young family returned to Locust Corners to reside with Ed Cressman until their house was completed. Then Edmund resided with the younger Cressmans until his death in 1952. Almond's father had always been interested in politics and had served in many township offices. He was Highway Commissioner for many terms. Edmund served one term as Clinton County Drain Commissioner. During these years Almond also became interested in politics and held the office of Township Constable at the age of twenty-two. He represented the Republican Party of Olive Township to the Clinton County and the State Republican Conventions many times. In 1957 Almond was elected Supervisor of Olive Township and served in that capacity for ten years. Since that time he has served on various commissions, including the Governor's Blue Cross-Blue Shield Study Commission. Almond was appointed to the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and was Chairman of that group for two years and served as Chairman of the Michigan Association of Regions for one term. Almond was finance chairman of the Clinton County Republican Party for one term and was Chairman of the Clinton County Chapter of the American Red Cross for three years. Presently Almond is serving on the Clinton County Planning Commission and is on the Board of Directors of Gratiot County Supply Company. Almond joined the Olive Grange, No. 358 when he was fourteen years old. He held various offices in the Grange and was Master at the age of eighteen. He was also an active leader of the Clinton County Pomona Grange and served as Master of that organization for many years. During those years Almond and Dorothy were Assistant and Lady Assistant Stewards of the Clinton County Pomona Degree team. They put on degree work at several Stage Grange Sessions here and throughout the State. Almond served on the Executive Committee of the Michigan State Grange for many years and was Overseer for many years. Following the example of his father and grandfather, Almond joined the St. Johns Lodge Number 105 F & A. M. and has been treasurer of the Blue Lodge for three years. He also belongs to Radiant Chapter Number 79, Order of the Eastern Star and serves as Marshal of that Chapter. The Cressmans have enjoyed traveling extensively within the Continental United States, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. In 1976 the Cressmans were selected by Farmers and World Affairs and the U. S. State Department to be Farm and Cultural Exchange Representatives to Pakistan. For six weeks they traveled the length and breadth of Pakistan exchanging agricultural, social and economic ideas with the people of that country. The Cressmans have been active members of the First Congregational Church of St. Johns for many years, serving on many committees. With the help of their son, [] and grandson, [], they are still farming Almond's childhood farm of Locust Corners as well as the one hundred acre farm on Price Road in Section 8, Olive Township where they have resided since 1947. Almond B. Cressman
