A Clayton family genealogy
Compiled by William A. Clayton
Gateway Press 1992
John Clayton of Gloucester and Isle of Wight counties, Virginia,
is the earliest proven ancestor for this family. He was a contemporary
of John Clayton, the famous botanist, and his father who was attorney general
of the Virginia colony, but no relation to this family is known. John died
in Isle of Wight county in 1758 leaving a will that mentions seven children,
including son George. The line is followed through George and his son,
Charles, to Charles Collier Clayton, born 1781 in Charlotte county, then
to his son, Charles Collier Clayton, Jr. Charles Collier Jr. was born in
1801 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. He married Eliza Berryan Richey
in 1824 in Jefferson County, Alabama. Collier and two of his brothers were
among the first settlers of northeast Mississippi according to abstracts
of property in Itawamba county dating to 1836. Descendants of Collier Jr.
are followed up to the present. Other chapters follow the other children
of Charles Collier Clayton, Sr. and his wife, Nancy Toney, and their descendants
where known including female lines. Among the related families mentioned
are Abernathy, Anderson, Arnold, Blythe, Griffin, Jameson, Moore, and Peterson.
In reviewing this book Everston's Genealogy Helper says, "Of special note
is the well written narrative history throughout the book which incorporates
research findings and conclusions for the fellow researcher to examine
as well as biographical and family material."
