Antwerp Township

Antwerp Township

- A Historical Overview -

Antwerp township was among the first of seven original townships associated with it's parent County - Van Buren. And, although Antwerp was not officially organized until 11 March, 1837, there are a number of significant events having taken place here prior to it's formal organization, under the auspices of the Michigan Territorial Council.

And, while we cannot, nor should not, overlook the presence of the many Native-Americans that made (what was to become) Antwerp their home for countless generations, prior to the arrival of those pioneering Americans of European descent, the focus of this overview is confined to those later immigrants. That is, the study of the Native-American population inhabiting SW Michigan from prehistoric times up an into the 1830's is far beyond the scope of this overview.
