BOYLE family of Ireland

BOYLE family of Ireland & Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Michael COLLOPY and Mary Elizabeth BOYLE

I have two BOYLE families of Tailors who intermarried in Glasgow; at least one of them is from Ireland. The scarcity of records has made it difficult to take either of these branches very far back.

According to Census & marriage records, Thomas BOYLE,  a master Tailor  was born in Ireland in about 1809. He appears to have been still alive in 1871 because he was not described as deceased on his son's marriage record [John Boyle the father of his wife was listed as deceased]. He was married in Ireland [based on the birthplace given in the census for at least 4 of their children] to Margaret FREELAND born about 1812 in Ireland, although their marriage has not been found & neither have the baptisms of their children. His death certificate has now been located, so more information is available.

James Boyle & wife Bridget Harkins had a son;
Thomas BOYLE

d. 7th October 1934 at 20 Brandon St, South Perth, Western Australia [at the residence of his daughter Mary Elizabeth Collopy]  & was buried at Karrakatta.

John BOYLE was a journeyman Tailor and appears to have died between 1850-1851 [he not in the 1851 census and his wife is then a pauper and a widow with a 2 month old baby]. He has been a difficult man to find but was born in the parish of Clanmanney, Co Donegal, Ireland, according to his marriage record.  I have found baptism records for two of his children, both baptised at St Andrews Catholic Church, Glasgow, Scotland. John BOYLE married Elizabeth Duffey/Duffy [A powerloom weaver, who according to her death certificate born about 1814 in Glasgow, the daughter of Francis Duffy and Miss Jamieson.] on the 13th Feb 1835 at Glasgow, Lanark.  Elizabeth died on 30th June 1889 at Ipswich, Queensland of Chronic Bronchitis and senile decay, the informant being her son Francis BOYLE. Her death notice in the Ipswich Herald 2 July 1889 describes her as Elizabeth Duffy, relict of the late John Boyle of County Donegal, Ireland.
1. Catherine Boyle
b. 5 December 1838 Glasgow & baptised 10 December 1838 at St Andrews Catholic Church, Glasgow.
d. Not in the 1851 or 1861 Census.
2. Peter G Boyle
b. 20 September 1841 Glasgow & baptised 20 September 1841 at St Andrews Catholic Church, Glasgow.
d. ? Alive in 1861, listed as a clothlapper.
3. John Boyle
b. abt 1845, Glasgow, Scotland
d. March 1898 in Queensland, Australia & was buried 7th March 1898 at Toowong, Cemetery. Also buried in the same grave was Thomas BOYLE who died 3 Nov 1898 age 0 years and Jane INNES buried 15th July 1946 age 87 years.
John was a Bootmaker and lived at Downing St, Spring Hill [funeral notice The Brisbane Courier 7 March 1898. Notice mentioned brother Francis Boyle, Bootmaker of Gotha St. I couldn't find a death notice].
4. Francis Boyle
b. abt 1848, Glasgow, Scotland
d. June 1924 & was buried 9 June 1924 at Toowong Cemetery, Toowong, QLD
Francis was a Bootmaker & lived at 105 Gotha St, Fortitude Valley. Electoral Roll shows him as living with a Catherine Boyle, domestic Duties & John Joseph Boyle Bootmaker. These are presumably his wife and son. A funeral notice in the paper on 25th September 1922 refers to Mrs Francis Boyle of Gotha St as the sister of Robert Ferguson.[Confusingly, there is a another Francis Boyle married to a Catherine O'Lochlin/Laughlan. He was a Baker & that family live at Moggill Rd, Indoroopilly]
5. Mary Joseph Boyle
b. January 1851 Glasgow, aged 2 months in the 1851 Census, when her family was living at 61 Princess St.
d. 23 January 1898 at 16 Parker St, Perth, Western Australia.
Mary was a Sewing Machinist.

In the 1851 Census, Elizabeth [Duffy] Boyle is aged 39 & a widow pauper, living at 61 Princess St, Glasgow. John Boyle has died, it must have been in the last year, as baby Mary is only 2 months old. Peter is 9, John is 6 and Francis is aged 3. There is no sign of Catherine, who would be 12 if she is still alive. By the 1861 Census the family is living at 20 Main St, Glasgow and Elizabeth, now 47 is described as a Powerloom Weaver, son Peter 19 as a clothnapper, John 16 a shoemaker & 13 year old Francis and 10 year old Mary are scholars.
I can't find the families in the 1871 Census, although Thomas Boyle [junior] a tailor,  is boarding at 7 Downie Place, Govan, Lanarkshire with David & Elizabeth Smith and their Grandson David Boyle.

Thomas Boyle , a Tailor's Cutter [son of Thomas Boyle, Master Tailor and Margaret Freeland] marries on the 24th October 1871 at the Francis Chapel in the Hutchesontown District of Glasgow to Mary Joseph Boyle, a Sewing Machinist [daughter of John Boyle a deceased Journeyman Tailor and Elizabeth Duffy].
