John and Margaret McDannald's daughter Malinda was born on Feb 18, 1843 in Brown Co. IL.

In 1859, when she was 16, she wrote this poem:




In 1860 she received a teacher's certificate in Brown County, Illinois. At that time she had many suitors and we still have many letters of young men writing her, expressing their feelings. In 1865, she joined her family on the wagon train that took six months from Illinois to Oregon.

She taught school in Oregon from 1866 to 1869.


She wrote this poem, Feb. 21, 1867 when she was 24:





She married Isacc Wallace Hodgen on Feb 18, 1869 in Milton, Oregon.

She died on May 17, 1915, at the age of 72, in Milton-Freewater, Umatilla County, Orgeon. She was buried May 19 in Mountain View Cem., Walla Walla, Washinton.
