The earliest record found that mentions Stephen Smart was when
he took the Oath of Allegiance before the Bute County, North Carolina, Committee of Safety. John Smart and Peter Smart, believed to have
been John's brother, are listed as have taken the oath at the same time.
This record was dated 1775-1776, indicating that Stephen Smart was at least twenty one years of age at this time. This would make him born my at least 1754. This date would fit with the estimated dates birth of his siblings.
Research has failed to find the name of Stephen's wife, but once again there is a strong tie to the Bennett family continuing with Stephen Smart and one of his sons had the middle name of Bennett. This all making a good case that either Stephen's mother or his wife was a Bennett.
