National Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

2. Camp Sherman was a Union Tent City between Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi.
3. Military; Served as Private and Corporal. Civil War, Company I, 97th Regiment,
Indiana Volunteers under Captain James Holston. Captain James Holston was brother-in-law
to Cassandra Ann Bedwell. After the war was over, and in 1867, three years before
Cassandra died, James petitioned the Sullivan County Court for guardianship of
the children of Nicholis Jackson.
4. Nicholis Jackson had black hair, black eyes, dark complexion and was 6' 1"
tall. He was 34 years old at time of enlistment. He was a member of the Methodist
Church in Pleasantville, Jefferson Twp., Sullivan County, Indiana
5. To the descendents of Nicholis Jackson he was held up to the family as a war
hero. To the descendents of Cephes Linder he was considered a deserter because
he went off to war and left his family to suffer the hardships of trying to make
a living without a man on the farm.
