Note for the State censuses:
Some Counties, totally or partially, are no more available. And the official data is not always what it seems. No Belgian found in Ellicott, Chautauqua County, no Belgian in Catskill, Greene County. In other places, the records are unreadable, ink faded, or pages partially destroyed. Sometime one or more Election Districts were not preserved and the records are so not complete as they would have.
William Dollarhide, a renowned genealogist, in his book “New York State Censuses and Substitutes” published in 2006 tell why: “Beginning with the first state census taken in 1825 and every state census thereafter, two sets of the census schedules were prepared. The county clerk in each county was to retain an original set, while a duplicate original set was sent to the state census office in Albany. Therefore, there was originally both a county copy and state copy of every census taken. Sometime before 1911, the duplicate original state copies of the censuses were transferred to the manuscripts section of the New York State Library, located within the state capitol building in Albany….
On March 29, 1911 a disastrous fire in the state capitol building nearly destroyed one of the largest libraries in America. Totally burned to ashes was a card catalog with over one million index cards. Hardest hit was the Manuscripts Room, where all of the original tale copies of the state censuses were stored.
An inventory of the holdings of the state library immediately after the fire in 1911 confirmed that a complete run of state censuses 1825-1905 was held in the Manuscripts Room of the State Library and virtually all them were destroyed beyond salvage.
As a result of the fire, the county copies of state censuses originally retained at the county clerks offices across the state are the only sets available today for the state censuses 1825-1905. The county copies listed as 'lost’ were lost at the county level and there is no known duplicate copy due to the 1911 fire at the state library…”
