Known as "Samuel of Mayo", he was one of the wealthiest men in Virginia and North Carolina and was heavily involved in land speculation with his good friend and neighbor James Madison Sr., the father of President James Madison. His home was one of the social centers of Virginia. He moved to Georgia for a time and was involved in land speculation there, but returned to the Virginia/North Carolina area after losing several family members to illness in Georgia.
