Call to Reverend Cummings
A call from the united congregations of Ebbing and Sinking Springs, on Holston's
River, Fincastle County, to be presented to the Rev. Charles Cummings, minister
of the Gospel, at the Rev'd Presbytery, of Hanover, when sitting at the Tinkling
Spring:
Worthey and Dear Sir: We being in very destitute circumstances for want of the
ordinances of Christ's house statedly administered amongst us under distressing
spiritual languishment, and multitudes perishing in our sins for want of the
bread of life broken among us; our Sabbaths too much profaned, or at least
wasted in melancholy silence at home; our hearts and hands discouraged; our
spirits broken with our mournful condition, so that human language cannot
sufficiently paint. Having had the happiness, by the good Providence of God, of
enjoying part of your labors, to our abundant satisfaction, and being
universally well satisfied by an experience of your ministerial abilities,
piety, literature, prudence, and peculiar agreeableness of your qualifications
to us in particular as a gospel minister. We do, worthey and dear sir, from our
very hearts, and with the most cordial affection and unanimity, agree to call,
invite and entreat you to undertake the office of a pastor among us, and the
care and charge of our precious souls. And upon your accepting of this, our
call, we do promise that we will receive the word of God from your mouth, attend
on your ministry, instructions and reproofs, in public and private, and submit
to the discipline which Christ has appointed in his church administered by you
while regulated by the word of God, agreeably to our confession of faith and
directory. And that you may give yourself up wholly to the important work of the
ministry, we do hereby promise to pay unto you annually the sum of ninety pounds
from the time of your accepting this, our call; and that we shall behave
ourselves toward you with all that dutiful respect and affection that becomes a
people towards their minister, using all means within our power to render your
life comfortable and happy. We entreat you, worthey and dear sir, to have
compassion upon us in this remote part of the world, and accept this our call
and invitation to the pastoral charge of our precious and immortal souls, and we
shall hold ourselves bound to pray. In witness whereof, we hereunto set our
hands, this 5th day of January, 1773.

Goodspeed History of Tennessee, Sullivan
County, 1887
Of other early settlers there were in the fork the McKinleys, McCorkles, Scotts,
Hodges, Greggs, Torbetts, Dinsmores, Hughes, Kings, Hogans, Sharps and Grosses.
Col. William Christie [Christian] lived near where Kingsport now is, on the
south side of Reedy Creek. The same neighborhood was the birthplace of Gen.
Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Long Island and much other land in the vicinity became
the property of Richard Netherland, the father of Hon. John Netherland. Fort
Womack, which stood two miles east of Bluff City, was built by Jacob Womack. It
afforded protection for the people who lived in the territory now covered by the
Fourth, Sixteenth, Ninth and Twentieth Civil Districts. It is said that when on
one occasion the people were forted here a marriage took place between Hal Massengill and Penelope Cobb. From this union have sprung a large number of
descendants, many of whom still reside in the county.
The first or one of the first mills in the county is said to have been built by
John Sharp, an Indian trader. It was a small tub-mill, and stood on the spot
occupied by the mill built a few years later by John Spurgeon at the mouth of
Muddy Creek.
Sullivan County was the second county formed in what is now Tennessee, and
included all the part of Washington County lying north of a line formed by the
ridge dividing the waters of the Watauga from those of the Holston, and
extending from the termination of this ridge to the highest point of the Chimney
Top Mountain. The act was passed in October, 1779, and in February, 1780, the
county court was organized at the house of Moses Looney, at which time a
commission was presented appointing as justices of the peace Isaac Shelby, David
Looney, William Christie, John Dunham, William Wallace and Samuel Smith. Isaac
Shelby exhibited his commission dated November 19, 1779, appointing him colonel
commandant of the county, and D. Looney of the same date appointing him major.
Ephraim Dunlap was appointed State’s attorney, and John Adair, entry-taker. The
court adjourned to meet at the house of James Hollis. As the records of this
court were almost destroyed during the civil war, but little is now known
concerning it. For a few years the courts were held somewhere in what is now the
western part of the county, at the Yancey Tavern, near Eaton’s Station, or at
the house of Mrs. Sharp, near the mouth of Muddy Creek, and possibly at both
places. |

Historic Sullivan – A history of Sullivan
County, Tennessee
The first account of permanent settlers was of those who came here in 1765. In
the spring of this year John Sharp, Thomas Sharp and Thomas Henderson came from
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, cleared some land and raised a crop of corn on the farm
once owned by D. 0. King in Holston Valley. In the fall at harvest time they
improvised cribs of poles and put up their corn.
They then returned to their homes in Pennsylvania, and in the spring of 1766,
came back with their families only to find their previous season's crop almost
totally destroyed by the wild animals that roamed at will during their absence.
They settled upon three different tracts of land—the one later owned by King,
another once owned by Gen. John R. Delaney, and the third, formerly the property
of Ireson Longacre. These farms were about five miles apart and were all
bordering upon the Holston river. |
